Living room redesign

Hello, I'm looking for a little help on redesigning my living room. I want to get new furniture and replace this giant mirror with something else. I have recently updated a few things since these pictures were taken. I have a black leather sectional with the same set up as you can see in the picture but with no end tables (The end table on the right is replaced with a section of couch). I have new faux white blinds on all the windows to dilute the wood appearance, and I have mounted a flat screen TV on the wall perpendicular to the doors on the left.

The ceiling goes up about 28 feet so I'm not sure what to do about the giant mirror but I would like it to be replaced, behind it is the darker wood, and I also want to replace all of the furniture in the room. Any help would be appreciated, I am not very good at this whole designing thing.

Also I am not looking to spend a ton on the giant mirror, I know the best thing to do in my opinion would be to have the brick go all the way up the wall but that is a little more than what I want to pay for at the moment. I just don't know what to replace the mirror with.

Try leaving the mirror but find a large vertical colorful painting to put in front of it. Obviously the painting should be quite a bit smaller than the mirror. You could even lean two paintings against the mirror, one shorter and smaller than the other and overlapping somewhat.

If you're replacing the couch perhaps go for a different color than black. Navy blue might be a good color. Replace the area rug you have with one that is much larger and has more vibrant colors. Paint out all the wood strips on the wall so that you have a clean area of just one color. The wood in this room overwhelms everything else. You need large and dramatic art for these walls, but pick only what speaks to you, not something generic and mass-produced. It makes a huge difference. Get a large glass and metal coffee table because the last thing you need is more wood. It will look more current and showcase your new rug. I would look at Oriental rugs at rugsUSA, esalerugs, e-bay and catalinarugs. More modern rugs with dramatic colors and designs would also work. Be brave with color and styles in this large room that needs drama and good design in everything you put in it. The room can also take a large plant or two, even in tree form like a Ficus benjamina in front of the French doors.

I like the way the mirror reflects the lighting but think the brick would look good also. Could you cover the mirror with thin drywall and paint it like the walls or would that look tacky? Maybe put some colorful art over the mantel. Live with it like it is for awhile and see what you think...Save your pennies until you have decided. I like your room and I think you could get another chair to match the one your have..in front of the window with table and lamp between. Or put the two chairs, one on either side of the fireplace, swiveled to watch TV or have a conversation with people on the couch.

Thanks for the input, I plan on doing all new furniture so I'm looking what everyone/anyone would think a good color would be for the space. I know the black leather looks fine but I'm looking to change it up a little.

I'd cover the mirror with something that mimics the wall texture/color - like plain removable wallpaper or opaque window film, then try to figure out how to hang some large artwork there. Probably not enough space to lean it, but you might be able to hang it from the trim at the top with something invisible like fishing line.

Or look at some of the decorative removable wall paper and just use that:

Not a Pro.

I would lean or hang a large painting layered over the mirror. Using the mirror as a border for the painting if need be.
