Need Help with Dining Room Lighting Issue

We just moved in a couple of days ago. After the home inspection, it was found that we have vermiculite insulation in the ceiling. We haven't had it tested yet in fear of shelling out a bunch of money to get the insulation replaced. At the moment, there is one globe light in a really awkward position and no junction above where we would like to have our table. We jumped the gun and bought an overhanging floor light, but with such plush carpet it is not stable and very impractical for anyone sitting at the table who may bump into it. Also, we're not crazy on the way it looks. We can't drill into the ceiling because of vermiculite, but can drill into a stud, so were thinking about chaining a pendant light from the outlet behind the table, but I am finding the options for pendant lights either unattractive (in my opinion), or non-existent. We don't want to do wall sconces or side table lights. Any specific lights that you have seen or know about are appreciated.

The first thing that came to my mind was candles! Not very practical though. I'll be interested to see what other Houzzers come up with.

I think that the chaining idea is a good one and these days you can get some very bright LED lights that are very lightweight.

If you put some sort of track lighting on the wall, people on one side of the table could wind up getting light in their eyes. Or find studs that you can connect a decorative track on the ceiling. Have you thought about making the dining area a sitting area and putting the dining area in a better spot?

It seems to me that adding a light that doesn't quite look right is throwing good money after bad. How about finding an interim solution while you figure out what to do with the insulation and work on stabilizing your floor lamp. How about getting something flat for the floor lamp to sit on and then putting some weights on top of the base. You could have a piece of thick acrylic custom cut or go for plywood.

There MUST be an electrical outlet on the long wall. Get a nice long console/server, add two table lamps. Move the table away from the wall. Forget the ceiling. Find a new spot for paperwork and bills.

Follow up! Previous owners failed to include the previous inspection they had which revealed no asbestos in vermiculite. No issues with installing ceiling fixture now. Thanks for all of the suggestions!
