I hope they will be- I'm not really sure what to expect with this variety.....but will soon find out!

My camera can not come anywhere near capturing the colour of this bloom. It's deep rich purple-maroon is beyond its capabilities, so you will have to use your imagination. I will try for a few more shots later on when the bloom is fully mature. At the moment, there is not much of the frilly edge that is suppose to be there- so I guess that is still to come?

Maguires 'Mt Edgecombe'

So many photos, and not one of them close to the actual colour......try thinking more purple, and deeper and more velvety.

Well...no increase on the waviness along the petals after all, only the small crimping along the edges. Maybe next year it might become a little more pronounced. Flowers are closing up now, and I have self-pollinated, so fingers crossed that something may come of it. It certainly is an unusual bloom, and a very distinctive colour.....even if the camera can't manage to capture it very well!

I forgot to ask, what is the lovely soft pink and white with the green star in the throat next to Mt. Edgecombe? It looks familiar so it must be a Maguires..?? It looks like one that I may have loved and lost but the name escapes me at the moment.

Yes, you would know this one, Donna. No wonder you recognized it...it's Maguire's 'Ada's Flower'.

Oh Julie, that is just beautiful!! I did have one several years ago and it died shortly after it bloomed and I never got the chance to get another. Really beautiful, I love it!!

Maguires produced so many beautifully stippled varieties, some more spotted than others but all very beautiful. I only have a few left. I have a healthy Judith which is lightly stippled but not one of the gorgeous ones. I also have a pot with a mother bulb and a good sized offset that is labeled Natalie which has yet to bloom for me! I am hoping for this year but I was hoping for last year and the year before as well!! I think I have a few more but nothing with the stippling. I also have a pot of Adrianas which has bloomed in the past. And of course, I do have a Krakatoa which is healthy and needs no stippling to make it gorgeous!! Also, Julia and Envy and I believe I still have a Lavender Blue all of which are healthy. I have not had good luck getting seeds on many of these bulbs but I did get good self of Rebel of which I did lose the mother bulb to virus but I have a good size pot of seedlings with one bulb that could bloom if it felt like it!! I have a few other crosses as well but not many.

I would absolutely love a few self seeds of Ada's Flower if the opportunity presented itself!!! ;-))

Donna, I have a few young seedlings from 'Ada's Flower' that I thought might manage to bloom this year, but it looks as if I will have to wait another season before I see what I have ended up with ( they didn't get the best of treatment over winter, so I can't blame them ). At least by next spring, I may be able to give an example of what can be expected from her seeds.

These Maguires must really be adapted to the warmer climates, as I find Maguire's bulbs some of the most robust and easy to flower and generous seeders of all my hippeastrums. And the poor things are in less than ideal conditions stuck out on my table in all weather, and in cramped pots....I simply don't have the space for them to expand as I would wish and still be able to keep them away from my other plants.....and they are so lovely, too!

Glad to hear that you have a few beauties of your own that are hanging on! I'll soon know if seed pods are developing and let you know.....already they look as if they are swelling a little...so here's hoping!

What state do you live in or are you in Australia? How do you force your bulbs to bloom in October? I have been trying to force some of our Mauire bulbs and ony a few are blooming out of seacson.

I live in Florida and the season is March-May.

Yes, that is right. October is the main flowering month for us here. I'm surrounded with flower scapes at the moment and hardly know where to look, they are opening up daily! And it's a lovely sight!

But my attempts at selfing 'Mt Edgecombe' have failed. Maybe next year I might have better luck.

Donna, yes, all the luck is going Ada's Flower's way. She is having no such difficulties. Her seed pods are swelling nicely....... putting on an special effort this year!

Both pots below are 'Ada's Flower', and when the last two flowers finish - they are fading as we speak - I hope to have eight seed pods ripening.

Fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong, but last year she produced healthy viable seeds, and should do so again this year.
