Chicago Hardy may work for you, you'll probably still need to protect it from the cold.

Yes I’m the winter Inwil’ put it in the garage
Our winters are long and cold so it’s either the garage or we dig and bury it..

As Jason mentioned above Hardy Chicago .

Very good eating fig as well.

there are other mount etnas hardier than HC. but any early ripener will work if potted n protected.

My figs are potted and stored in the garage for winter
Use to bury them b4 but too
    Much work
My Etnas figs are also known as Hardy Chicago figs....
Its so hard to identify fig trees that we rename them
  • 8 years ago

Have seen the name Hardy Fig in a large chain grocery store here . That name is nothing more than a marketing name.

Bluemoonlight - your ripe fig picture looks like a Hardy Chicago .

As a note ours was 10 seasons old when it was put inground here out in the open not next to a wall for a micro climate and left unprotected to test how it could stand up to the cold.

The so called polar vortex winter season few seasons after inground planting coldest temp was 23 below and was damaged down to soil level but survived.

Since then i decided to cut it back low each season put a 30g pot over it with a large stone to keep in place.

In the 1960s grandmother had a good size unknown dark type fig tree few blocks from Midway airport that uncles would trench it each season.

To get more variety you might have to go zone 6 and up, still store them inside to get a decent plant.

Where did you get your mission fig tree?

I live other side of Canada, Near Vancouver, BC. PNW, cool summer.

I have few type of black mission trees, only fake one from local nursery grow well here with 2 crop of sweet figs with amber flesh.

You live at Montreal near "Jean Talon" market?, They sell Jean talon black fig tree, It is as cold hardy and similar to Hardy chicago, figs are sweeter. I think that it will grow well in your area and grow well in pot as well. Wish you are close to me, Those fig trees do not fit our wet fall climate,. I can dump it to you. Just want to keep one only

I agree, soo many different fig varieties... Many Mt. Etnas... Apparently my fig is a hardy Chicago... again, might be a slightly different variety of Hardy Chicago or Hardy figs.... Anyways, none of my figs darken up as much as yours.

Yours appear to be a dark blue/black while mine are slightly lighter, purple/brown.

I also noticed the interior of your figs are a darker red compared to mine.

Again, several different Mt. Etna figs and to be honest, maybe mine isn't really a Hardy Chicago. I thought it was a Strawberry Verte until people pointed out that it wasn't.... and then they turned brown lol.

Here's a picture of the darkest figs I got off my tree this year.

The Figs above were the 2nd sweetest crop I got off the tree this year, the deepest exterior colour. The interior of these figs weren't as bright as others I harvested after. Some get a really nice bright red colour but not the deep dark red you get.

I was just at Jean talon market today
I went looking for trees but only found one and the owner didn’t remember the name
Je s gonna get back to me
Im now collecting Greek fig trees
Got the white Péloponnèse does well
    Waiting on Vasilika blacks and
One I’m really excited is the Marcopoulo blacks
Honestly just want 2 /3 trees that work well here that’s all

You can buy Jean Talon for $15CA from Brugmansia quebec

    https://brugmansia-quebec.com/Catalogue/Figuier%20Fonce_ang.html

Anyway, You seem have few fig trees to play with.

you may consider "Florea", it is small plant and cold hardy, few weeks early ripening figs than Hardy Chicago, 2 crops, small tree easy on pot culture.

Ive ordered the Cvetko fig tree from Brugmansia
    2 years ago
But I abandonnéd all my trees and they died
    I regret it now
It I’m starting it up again
Like I said now I got a mission tree
And 2-3 very small Greek ones ....
I saw A desert king at a shop the other day I might buy it cost 20$

I think that you like big fig with cold hardy, It is hard. Hope someone give you good advice, May be Northland fig tree, it is very cold hardy and 2 crop big figs, I have similar LDA and Damatie, Both are very good figs.

Desert king grows well in our dry summer climate fig crazy, I do not think that it grow well in your area, I saw pro-grower in Toronto with so so results, Do not waste your time.

I have Vasilika sika, it is waste of time in our climate, It slept most of time.

I will reduce fig trees next year due to our poor cool summer climate, I got some Hardy Cherry trees, They grow well in ground in most area with good results

    http://www.fruit.usask.ca/dwarfsourcherries.html

I prefer to dump trees in ground without too much caring, pot culture are too much work.

North land have t heard of that one
    I will check it out
Yes for Vasilika ur probably but I want to try it anyways
    Thanks for the advice
Where can I find Northland fig tree
I just read it on Adriano’s fig tree
It I don’t know who sells them
    last modified: 7 years ago

Sorry, It should be called Nordland. it is USA raintree's nursery variety.

I do not know who sell them in Canada, But Some nice USA seller sell its cuttings to Canada but higher shipping cost. it is better to buy more varieties together to lower shipping cost, I can not post them here due to black list problem to them.

If you do not want to buy from USA, you may look for LDA, Dalmatie, or Niagara black, There are Canadian seller selling them. I have LDA, Dalmatie in pots, I use wrong fertilizer this year, They hardly grow very much, I can share few cuttings of Dalmatie, Brugmansia-quebec sold me fake Olympian fig tree, 2+ years have passed in ground, it is 7 FT free with big figs ( 100g+) close to LDA/Dalmatie, I can give your cuttings of it cuttings as well. If it doesn't have lots of Breba next year, I will remove it and plant Olympian tree back which I have in pot, it is high production fig tree for 2 crops but hate pot culture and dropped all its breba and main crop.

Brugmansia-quebec trees came with FMV mites, I assume all cuttings have FMV virues.

Sure I don’t mind have my some cuttings it would be my pleasure
I can send you some as well
    Let me know

    Hey Jack,

Any cuttings left for LDA and Dalmatie? Love to try growing those two varieties. We can exchange cuttings. I'm in Vancouver.

Hi Trinh, I used the wrong fertilizer, Both of them hardy growing, LDA is still 10 inches tall, Dalmatie is bigger but I already have 2 person wanting cuttings. I feed them right fertilizer late, LDA grows 2 suckers of 2 inches tall, I will try to airlaying it.

Hi Trinh, I don't have LDA but I have Dalmatie, Black Madeira didnt root the soil dryed out I noticed it is dry too late ☹ but I will have cutting .

Jack - love to grow the LDA if you can graft them

Anne- aww maybe next time for BM airlayer.. cutting please :) are you cutting them soon?
Can you text me how much is the shipping? Hows the CDA airlayer? Your godfather airlayer works/sofeno cutting seems to root. If you can wait, i will hand deliver them to you next year when I’m in kelowna for cherry picking :)

Martin, I have questions to your post from September 17 2018, do you just cover Hardy Chicago using 30 gallon barrel ? and the fig doesn't freeze ?

    last modified: 7 years ago

Bluemoonlight, it is cut down pretty low and yes it gets very cold here always comes back and produces late crop end of September going into early October.

Its sibling is in 30g pot as well and the fig color is rich dark color and interior is same as first pictures in thread.

The one in ground does not color as well and of course wakes up later than pot grown here therefor put out the figs later and of course ripens later.

Current temp as i type is 18 with a high today of 29 below seasonal temps this month.

Martin, I was just thinking to plant a few in ground because
the containers are getting heavier as the years go by : )

Would you say that the barrel

doesn't give to much frost protection ? Is it more wind and frozen rain shelter ?

you might try pink fiberglass insulation, with a tarp over that.

    that works down to 0F.

if it gets much colder than that, you can add a pipe heating wire. the wire barely gets warm but that is enow to grow a large tree.

some people build a box of ridgid foam insulation which also works, especially with the heating wire.

Interesting... Might give the pink insulation a try. I was going to use a bunch of old blankets and a tarp.

I'm currently keeping my potted fig tree in an unheated shed that's protected by Winds from the North (House) South (Wood Fence) West (Another, bigger shed) and East (My car parking in front of shed). The shed appears to be warmed than the outside temps... I'm going to try to use a thermometer to see how much warmer.

Just throwing it out there because I don't see any new threads about over wintering figs and the old ones I find are outdated and incomplete. Main point I got from reading old threads was Figs prefers temps of 0-10C while dormant.

the old threads are wrong. my wrapped trees made it thru 2 nights

    of -1 F wiith only 10% damage.

wrapping in old blankets should work, but i don't know for how much cold.

    Bluemoonlight that is correct .

Also the containers get heavy with age this i know !

Could protect inground much better but it lived down to minus 18-21 below zero that polar vortex year and it had no protection other than snow not even container over it as it was an experiment it just so happened that a year or 2 later that cold winter came .

Now i put container over it .

Mentioned before when put inground the Hardy Chicago was groomed in a container for 10 years prior.

    Martin

um, i don;t think years in pot count much.

i find years inground matter most to toughness.

Martin is that minus 18-21 Fahrenheit or Celsius ?

susieqz, "years in containers doesn't count that much but the chances to survive would be better if the tree is older longer in container, right ?

my only experience has been with one that had been potted for 5 years, with one that went inground after 18 months. which wildly outperformed it.

there was a varietal difference. the older was a HC, the younger a dominick.

. the rest of my trees went in at 2 years. i do not believe that older trees do better inground

mine all survive because i deep plant them.

Bluemoonlight -that temp was -18 below zero Fahrenheit .

Here are time stamped pictures on disk from of inground hardy chicago at the time in container 1st one on left.

    Can enlarge just click picture.

Wow Martin you just made my day, always wanted to see your tree and it's just what I imagined, I bet I am not alone don't be shy to post a few more pictures.

My Hardy fig looks like the one in the middle with two leaders.

The containers look very large, I wander how did you water your container fig trees ?

I water my with watering can I enjoy that and examining the tree wile watering , in my climate when the summer sets in they need watering two times a day one gallon.

Largest containers are 8 gallons they all have saucers but I don't water if there is water in saucer.

    Thanks you Martin.

    Anna.

Brutal winters you have there brrrrrrr.

Susieqz what does it mean "deep plant them"?

    Thanks for your comment susieqz.

    Anna.

blue, i do what pons does.

    i dig a 2' ole n plop a big tree in it.

only a few inches remain above ground.

in this 7a area, the frost zone is only 12'', so it is not possible for me to loose a tree to cold.

of course, if it dies to the ground, i loose most of the crop, so i wrap them well too.
