How can I update my kitchen? Paint cabinets? Backsplash?

With only one photo it's not really possible to give you a complete answer. My first reaction to the "update" question is the upper cabinet doors which date the kitchen. May we see additional photos of the entire kitchen?

the decor on the top of the cabinet and matching red small appliances are not helping your cause.

I think your pretty red accents are just fine. The style of the upper cabinet doors can easily be changed with new doors - not cabinet replacement. Then, hardware updates can be made that will make the cabinets new and fresh. Please don't be offended by what may seem abrupt criticism.

Previous posters nailed it: decor on top of cabinets and upper cabinet doors.

I vote new hardware too. Something with cleaner lines.

Depends on your budget. I think your kitchen looks fine for what it is - the granite and backsplash complement each other. It is what it is. I personally wouldn't spend money just because my kitchen was "out of style" so to speak.

I think the red stuff is fine but I would ditch the decor on the top.

Maybe a different paint color for the walls but that would depend on how your kitchen relates to the rest of your home as it seems as though the other walls are painted in the same color. It seems as though everything in the kitchen is beige - counters; wall, floors, backsplash.

If you paint the cabinets you would still have the door style which isn't au Courant and painted cabinets are not nearly as durable a finish as wood and your cabinets seem to be in good shape.

I agree with jhmarie. It looks fine, HGTV is phony and tries to make people unsatisfied with what they have. I would remove the things above the cabinets but that's just me preferring a spare and utilitarian-looing space.

For no cost, remove the stuff on top of cabinets. For a bit of money, replace wall cabinet knobs with C style pulls or replace base cabinet drawer pulls with Cup style pulls. If you have the budget, replace the arch doors on upper cabs with shaker cab doors, if you like that style. You could paint the wall above the cabinets a different color. If you have a big budget and need more storage, replace wall cabinets with taller ones that reach to ceiling.

I think it looks fine as well, but I do think if it's something you are changing for you that painting the cabinets can so dramatically change the look of your kitchen and make you feel like you have something new and fresh.

Maybe get rid of the decor on the top of the cabinets, update the hardware on the cabinets, and add a new backsplash. Otherwise we can't see the rest of the kitchen, but it looks nice.
