This photo didn't show up in the first post for some reason it shows the tree has a little life left in it.

In situations like this, usually the thing to check for is root rot. Gently remove it from the pot and see if the soil is too wet. Are the roots tan and white (healthy)or are they dark brown, fall apart when you touch them and maybe stink?

If it is root rot it may not survive but there are some things you could try. Look first and we will take it from there. Don't give up hope.

Your main trunk appears to be green and alive.

I took it out of the pot to get a look at the pot, and I don't think it's root rot. The roots weren't dark brown, didn't fall apart and didn't stink.

The green on the trunk and the little bit of new grown is the only reason I'm feeling hopeful the tree can be saved. If it goes I'll still have two nagamis left, and they both look healthy, but then they all did a few months ago.

I t has been said that roots like yours cannot grow a tree. My Fukushu from seed screams out "Bovine Scat" and has done quite well. I just want to let you know if the crooked root is the problem that they are mostly if not completely wrong.

Dave where do you live and how much sunlight do they get?

How long did you keep them in those pots with that mix? When did you change them out? When you noticed a problem?

One of my other nagamis - the biggest, healthiest looking one - also has a crooked root. That's normal for seed-grown citrus, right?

Mike: I live in Maryland, just to the east of Washington DC. I have a southeast facing balcony. I have been growing all of the kumquats in Miracle-Gro since May 2016. One of them is still in that mix. My other two surviving trees (including the one in the pictures above) were switched to Espoma this past summer.

I first noticed an issue with dropping leaves last spring, but like I said earlier the problem really got bad a couple of months ago, with two of my trees dying.
