I am trying to figure out recessed lighting layout for my living room. Our living room is 14 feet deep by 21 feet wide. It has a small alcove on the left side where we expanded our bathroom into the living room by about 3 feet. Originally, I planned for about 9 4-inch recessed can lights in the room. Now, a space planning person is suggesting 13 lights.

Here are my questions. Where do you start with light planning. From the corners? And how many feet/inches?

Do you prefer actual cans where you can replace bulbs vs. the one piece LEDs where the light comes as one unit?

How many switches/zones?
