It started growing like crazy! Probably an 8 inch pot. This is still 2016.

Great visual progression of your sans with pictures, Barb. Your last one does look a lot like the species aubrytiana, a very strong, fast grower and darned near indestructible. I have assumed Ayo is the same.

Was Ayo by chance one of the ones that they bred for fiber production?

robdb8, I don’t know any history on this one, but I don’t think it was in the fiber research project. . What do you think Russ and Stan?

I believe Ayo is the species aubrytiana, so wouldn't be one of the hybrids in the 1950s USDA fiber research program. I've never seen a list of all sans that were considered in the hybridizing, but I don't think it was there.

Metallica (guineensis) isn't as bright.

The hybrid fischeri X kirkii is very similar to aubrytiana.

Don;t own any and don't know any thing about them. They do look nice.

Looks like you have more plants than you know what to do with. Same here.

Just figured that maybe because of its ability to reproduce so quickly, they would want a characteristic like that for the fiber project. Good to know though.
