I would paint the dutch door the same color as the house.

It's a lovely house. I see a light above the main door, so that is a signal it is the primary entrance. You could also put a wreath on the door, or hang a tassel on that handle as additional indicators of its primary importance. Where is your mailbox? A bench would also be nice.

The brick walk is very nice, but that cutout is problematic visually and functionally. Fill it in with more of the same brick. I'd love ton see some container gardens on the stoop.

Looking at granny's pictures above I just realized a big and bright welcome door mat at only one door could also indicate which door you want used.

As for the little cut out garden, if you didn't want to do flowers could you use something from the beach like shells or rocks and make a big display or pile of those items? - or whatever you might gather on walks such as pine cones. Or fill the are with clean beach sand and make a little Zen garden with a small handheld rake that could make patterns in the sand, add some stones, colored sea glass. seashells, a feather, etc. It could be something fun for people/guests to rearrange every now and again. Or add to as you/ they gather more treasures. Or put a couple pots of various sizes there and fill with different things - upright twigs (could even spray paint them to match your colors), or the other collected items. That could be repeated on the porch with the same items - especially if you are going for a maintenance free (no watering, no weeding) situation.

If you could find it a great big padlock on the dutch door handle would be both decorative and a sign not to use that door.

Have a personalized welcome mat with *Entrance* made for the door you want used. I wish I had a Dutch door!

Adorable house & not a major problem. If U want your company to go in thru family room door, then easy enough to direct them this way with all the suggestions above. I love dutch doors, and I liked the idea of painting this door the same colour as the house as was mentioned, and keeping it in place so you can open the top for fresh air.

Find a great bench for under window, plant some large pots/urns & place them in front of dutch door & beside bench, as Architectural Gardens suggested.

You don't appear to have a door knocker, so finding in one in same material as door hardware would be another clue, or even a doorbell and a seaside entry mat.

We want to see the inviting look you create for family room door & entry. There shouldn't be any more confusion once your changes are made.

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE COMMENTS. Extremely helpful. To answer a few questions there is no mailbox on the outside of the house yet and that small shutter is actually just a boarded up old window that is no longer on the inside of the house (very strange). As much as I love the color of the dutch door I think that is a great idea to paint it the color of the house. We are actually going to change the color to a little bit more tan than yellow and then we were debating about a blue instead of the seafoam green for the door. Tough decision as they look so cute as is (if you have an opinion on the color please let me know). I do think including a bench and perhaps different sized planters underneath the dutch door and then a decorative padlock is a fabulous idea. Maybe put in some succulents has we need plants that don't need a lot of watering. That way we will block the bottom of the door and just use the top to let in light/breeze.

Great!! and you still have options like doorknocker, doorbell & entrance mat!! I love the current colours; however tan & a marine blue would be nice as well. Benjamin Moore has a nice selection of blues which bring in sea side feel.

Its hard to decide only because the stone on the outside of the house has yellow, grey, and tan tones in it (see picture). I agree the blue paired with the tan/very light brown would be great too. We stumbled on this picture and thats why we were debating on changing the doors to blue

I love both doors! And I think you own a beautiful cottage! I'd put a nice bench under the window or a small round table and one or two comfy chairs to sit and have a real nice cup of coffee, reading a great book! Some colorful flower pots and you're set!

You are definitely on the right track and the blue door in your inspiration pic is lovely as well. Needs a bench below the window for sure, and all the suggestions from 2taniya are right on point and would solve the dilemma.

Dutch doors are great, but too bad you have another door nearby. Have you considered converting the dutch door with a window? I don't know your floor plan, but I bet at some point it was a window.

From a construction stand point, it isn't a major project to make the door into a window. Takes some framing, siding, paint, drywall and trim carpentry. Probably 5 days to finish.

Whats on the other side of the dutch door in the kitchen? Would a window work?

Matt- to answer your question, the dutch door is very awkwardly placed. On the other side is a very small laundry room area that is placed in the corner and runs into the kitchen. There are no windows in this corner so I do think a window on the dutch door would be a great idea. Its unfortunate that we cant use the door really as there is no reason too. If we were to open it you would be looking at our dryer.
