Backsplash Around Window

Unexpected reno due to water damage. Need to replace backsplash. Moving from natural stone to gray subway tile and mosaic glass tile as accent for range. Should we tile around window?

I also would take the tile up and around the window.

I also like the idea of just the subway tiles all over and around the window till the ceiling. If you want to jazz up with the subway then you may lay them in a herringbone pattern. That will create some visual interest. Keep it simple with the choice of tiles.

absolutely do window. I would not use the bar tile above the stove. just continue w/your subway. That mosaic tile is very busy looking once installed, and really is quite the dated look now.

here are similar cabs, similar granite and gray/blue subway tiles. is this the look you want?

and please look into some cooler lights for your kitchen. you've got quite a yellow tint. (unless it's your photo)

Yes, the yellow tone is just iPhone camera. The lights are all installed right now, as the ceiling had to be replaced. So, there’s little light in the kitchen right now.

Not installed!!!!!! Lights are all not installed!!!!!

I would skip the mosaic tile all together. I would also take the subway up over the window. Make sure your installer takes the layout into consideration so it looks centered to the window.

I have to agree with many of the comments here. I would just do the subway tile, keep it simple and classic. The simple subway will never go out of style, but the mosaic will eventually look dated and people will be able to tell when you updated your kitchen. I would definitely bring the backsplash up to the ceiling around the window.

This is the type of look we are going for with the mosaic.

Tile around the sink up to the ceiling, skip the mosaic.

I kind of like the mosaic especially vertical.

Around the window. I don't care for the mosaic at all, but if you do, go for it.

if you like that look, then perhaps look at a different bar mosaic. the one you have is, well, not the best. and it's not at all like the ones in your photos.

    maybe:

DalTile has these in many color combos.

or maybe something in the marble. these are from Houzz, (but just search Random Bar or Linear bar mosaic tile)

    tilebar has these

    What is the counter material?

The countertops are granite...they are covered with cardboard as the contractors finishing installing the molding. The island is butcher block.

And this is a pic of the mosaic installed...not installed for us...just sample photo.

Are you doing the chimney hood? I am a little different, I guess - I love the vertical accent tiles. I do agree with going around the window. And to reiterate what someone else said - PLEASE make sure the tiler sketches out the tile placement first. your tiles will be cut on each side of the window - it would be nice if they were even... make sure to have enough waste of that glass tile - not as easy to cut...

Good luck - can't wait to see the final result

Tiny glimpse of granite in one your pictures shows that it may have lot of color variations and veining. When you are trying to decide on a back splash you must consider the kind of counter top you have and the color of the cabinets (wall color can be changed accordingly). If you really like the look of mosaic then I would suggest you to go with travertine tile which does not have sheen to it and looks very simple. This can be accented with the glass mosaic tiles in moderation. The key is to not overshadow the beauty of the granite which has many colors and veins. Too busy back splash may conflict with the busy pattern of the granite. Adding a picture for your reference. This is one of my projects. The granite looks very similar to yours.

This is the hood...hard to see, but I typically didn’t go around my home snapping photos...LOL.

    I like it!

So this is the kitchen sans backsplash, lighting, and cabinet crown molding to give perspective on room. Walls are agreeable gray.

Looks great! Although now I will have to doubt the choice of doing the mosaic upright - it feels too contemporary for this space - maybe stay horizontal

uh, agnostic on the mosaic -- I like your particular choice even though I generally don't like a change of tile at the stove. not sure I'd go around the window, though -- as in Beth's first example above, just above the cabinet level on either side is fine.

I want to thank those that called out lighting. I replaced my lights in my master bath to GE Reveal LED lights over the weekend and wondered about the effect in the kitchen. We made the change this evening. Although all the recessed lighting isn’t in yet, for the few that are, the change from soft white LEDs to the Reveal is amazing. My kitchen looks so different...I feel like the last few soft white years of my life have been a lie...!

@Debbi thanks!!! The mosaic for the range is a hubbie compromise. If he had his way, we would be all mosaic. We have been torn between vertical v horizontal. Thanks for advice!!!
