cleaning dark lvp

day one in my new house and I am already regretting my flooring choice. How do I get my dark vinyl clean? I have cleaned it 3 times and the dirt smear is every where. I feel like such an idiot for getting a dark color.

I see a "wet jet swiffer" in the back ground. What is the product used INSIDE the swiffer wet jet? Is it the RECOMMENDED cleaner for your floor? If it is not, you will want to stop using it and consult the manufacturer's requirements. I would find the maintenance instructions for your floor (what did you purchase? Do you know the brand/name of your floor? We can help you find it once we know this information).

What you are seeing right now is construction dust/streaks on a matte finished floor. The colour doesn't look too dark. In fact I would call this a mid-tone floor. It isn't necessarily the colour that is the issue, it could be the MATTE finish.

I would look at using a TINY bit of dishsoap (a drop of Dawn....literally a "drop") in a BIG BUCKET of water (ditch the wetjet for a while). I would clean a patch (4ft x 4ft) using a clean cotton cloth (yep...hands and knees stuff) and then RINSE THAT SECTION using CLEAN HOT WATER. Wipe it dry with a CLEAN COTTON TOWEL and then reassess.

Yes. That means 3 passes over the same 4ft x 4ft area. The RINSING and the WIPING DRY are SUPER important. Without the RINSING and without the WIPING UP, you are simply spreading around the dust. Water evaporates but dirt particles remain. The rinsing and wiping it dry will remove as much of the dust as possible.

If this improves your floor (and it should) you may have to do this a few times to get all of the dust off of your floor.

But before you do any more cleaning, PLEASE find the maintenance instructions. We need to know what things are allowed on your vinyl. Never EVER believe the makers of "cleaning products". They are trying to sell you something you probably don't need. Always follow the cleaning/maintenance instructions from the flooring manufacturer. Many of them do NOT allow swiffer products to be used on their products.

And stay away from steam. It kills more floors per year than any other product. It kills faster than Murphy's Oil Soap (MOS). And MOS can kill a hardwood floor inside of 5 years.

Resist the temptation to blast away dirt with heavy-duty cleaners. Instead, learn how to clean vinyl floors using the mildest possible method. Sweep or vacuum it every evening, and wipe up spills right away. To clean dirt that the broom or vacuum can't get, use a mop dampened with warm—not hot—water.
