Have you considered painting just the side of the upper and lower cabinet that is visible on the left -- paint them the same color as your island base.

You might consider adding a decoration to a couple of your kitchen overhead cabinet doors.

Also, before your flooring is put in, consider also painting that 4" indented "toe" space beneath the base cabinets the same dark color as the island.

Would not paint the dark wall an off white with your white cabinets. Something will end up looking dingy.

If you don't want to keep the really dark wall or island base, choose the darkest color from within your countertops.

Instead of "the usual" though, consider something like this painted the color you chose for your island base or the color you choose for your wall.

You posted a pic of the walls in an adjacent room. What is that color? I would prime a patch of your kitchen wall and paint a swatch with the color from the adjacent room. It is a nice neutral and the white trim does not make it look dingy. Plus, it would tie the whole space together.

Painting the island would help a lot too. Also can you lower the island light? It looks much too high and if it were lowered it would help break up the visual field of what cabinets and introduce color and texture into the mass of white.

With the floor installed and a different wall color, I think I prefer the white cabinets to the color you had before.

Don’t despair, the white as a good choice, it’s the lack of texture that’s making it feel flat. If you do a simple cream or grayish wash over the white paint, it will add back in dimension. Pick a warm color from counter, just slightly off white, one easy coat and you’ll have the tone on tone kitchen you wanted.

I agree with posters that have said the white units are lovely. In my view don’t touch them. I also agree that painting the walls will make all the difference and will look beautiful with your white units and countertop.

Continue that existing lighter wall color (Bungalow Beige, right?) right into the kitchen. You know it’ll look good with the white cabinets because it already looks good with the white trim, see?

Regarding the new flooring: Is it too late to pick a different color—something a bit darker? I’m afraid the color you’ve chosen is going to wash out the walls; there’s just not enough contrast between the two. Of course you could always repaint the existing walls in a color that would look better with the new floors but you’re really limiting yourself with this floor.

I like the suggestion of a wood colored floor. The contrast is nice with paint and fireplace, is seen in the before pictures. I like Sammy’s recommendations better than the before floor because the colors are more even, less like hickory wood. You need a brown, lifelike color, not reddish, not a trendy gray look.

I would not paint the island and recommend not, at least until you see everything else in place and live with it awhile.

The white is too cool for the warm tops and splash. It wouldn't be that hard to apply a glaze to warm up the white cabs. Also need the wall color to blend with the existing splash. A light taupe color.

Was there a fire or a flood? If the original floors couldn’t be salvaged (due to water damage, I assume), how could the cabinets be salvaged? Were the cabinets removed and then re-installed so that the bottoms and the subfloor could dry properly? And how did the cabinets become de-laminated — from the dehumidifiers? This all sounds so odd, especially the insurance part of it! Sorry for all the questions, but I’m just curious.

Here's an idea I would like to run past this smart and generous community: I'll paint the kitchen wall the same color as the rest of the downstairs (see picture below), but what if I leave the end wall, the one next to the couch, with the sliders and window, dark brown. That might work well to connect to the dark island. Also, the wall is pretty much a curtain anyway. Thoughts?

Yes, flood damaged the floor, but not the cabinets. The several days of high dry heat (used to dry out the subfloor) caused the cabinets to delaminate, as you stated, so insurance paid for the damage to them b/c it was a result of the clean up. They used the old boxes and they made new doors.

I personally do not care for accent walls, so I would paint all the walls the same....your kitchen will look so nice when done. As far as painting the island....you will probably have stools around it, so I would leave it dark until everything else is done, then see what you think.

I would not leave that wall brown. Dark accessories, like dark wood finials or bowls would be all you need.

The new floor will make a world of difference, so I wouldn't paint till that goes in. I agree with adding a cabinet or something to fill out the space over the backsplash.

So sorry this happened and you had to paint the cabinets. The white your designer recommended for the cabinets is the issue - it’s too close to true white for the other finishes in the room. For an interim fix I would change the wall color to a slightly cooler light tone in the greige family. But if you want the kitchen to be as good as it was previously, you should eventually change the color of the cabinets again, cheaper than having to change everything.

I would have made the insurance co replace the cabinets if they were damaged for what ever reason.

Sammy's suggestion of matching your existing house color from your other rooms is the easiest way to go. The concern was the color might "washout" next to the new floor. One designer trick you can use is to go one color shade deeper of the same color. If you find your existing wall color on a paint card strip you just go one or (two shades if it looks ok next to the cabinets and flooring together) darker of the same color. That way it will solve your problem and everything will still blend in with the rest of your house. The suggestion for "natural white" light is also the correct choice. You don't want to change the light color of the whole room to either "yellow" or "bluish". Also the suggestion for the dark accessories to pull the island into the scheme of things will work graciously for you. This is the easiest, least daunting, fastest and the best "careful" way of fixing it. Wishing you the best of luck!

Yes, Lori, I did install the new floor in my last rendering. Don't panic. I do believe this kitchen will turn out fine once you get the lighting and paint color right. It may take a bit of experimentation, but I'm sure it's doable.

Nice job Lori, big difference. You can also add a an open corner shelf for that upper cabinet and the shelf is usually 12" will go right over that tile extension. Since you already have white cabinets you can order that shelf from most cabinet places and is very inexpensive and you can probably get one unfinished so you can paint the same color as the kitchen...or even make one which is very simple shelf to make and that will make that wall complete... Something like this to give you an idea.

Yes, maybe try a lighter paint color to brighten up the room and since your cabinets are now white and flooring looks like a lighter color. That might make a huge difference!
