You need--he needs--5-year-old-boy curtains. Let him pick them out--give him a sense of control. Go to IKEA; see what he likes. If you need the blackout function, get a blackout liner.

I also think a shade would work great on his window. The draperies limit the space on that side of his bed that might be used for play at some point.

I'm not a fan of black-out blinds unless an adult is working the night shift all the time and must sleep during the day. A child does not need them.

I agree. Nice for a child to get used to sleeping without it being totally dark all the time. It really makes their lives and transitions easier. I have no coverings on any of my windows and here in the PNW in the summer it is light from 5 a.m. to 10 pm. When you close your eyes, it's dark!

Those choices look awfully grown-up for a little boys room. Do you need curtains? I see the windows also have blinds.

I don’t see a need for curtains at all they are just one more thing to get dirty in a kids room and I will tell he will out grow that bedding very soon. So wait until the next favorite thing comes along.

No blackout curtains and use the blinds you have. I think I would let him pick out fabric for a valence, truck, trains, etc. If you can’t find readymade it might be a fun Diy project to do together. If you don’t sew, iron-on tape would work well.
