Here are some photos from August 8 - 11 when the bulk of the plums came ripe.

Fruit went from green/yellow-green to red with a purplish waxy bloom. The purplish bloom could be polished off with a cloth. The largest were almost 2 inches in diameter. They were sweet and juicy when first ripe. They went darker red and got sweeter and softer at full ripeness. The skin before fully ripe was very tart, and I spit out the skin after eating the flesh. Flesh was yellow and free-stone.

After the fruit became fully ripe, the skin was not as bad, but still retain some tartness. The fruit did not last well, becoming mushy after a week or so after picking. We picked 6 of 3.8 litre pails of fruit, and likely 2 to 3 pails of fruit fell on the ground and was ruined. We gave away quite a bit of the fruit, and my wife made 3 batches of jam which was really good.

To sum it up, I was really happy to get some plums, and the taste was really good. I was impressed with the crop size, especially considering that this could only be described as a fractional crop. I was a bit disappointed that both trees are the same variety. Who would plant 2 plum trees of the same variety with no pollenizer variety? I was also a bit disappointed with how soft they got when dead-ripe. Perhaps they would keep better if picked a bit early and kept refrigerated. But my wife used them all up before I could experiment.

I think that based on descriptions that I have read online, these are a hybrid Japanese plum, most likely Pembina which seems to be one of the few varieties sold around here. Do you agree with my diagnosis?

What varieties would you recommend that I graft in spring? Who can sell me budwood?

Those look great. Sad to hear they turn to mush so quickly. Is there a way to defer that process?
