This is our living room i want this place to look more inviting but something in here does not feel right. The carpet has a long family history to it so I want to keep it. But dont know what else I could do

Suggestions ?

I love that blue rug! The color is so pretty. The suggestions above are spot on. You'll need some more color up top (curtains? wall decor? Lamps?) to compliment or match the blue.

Right now your color scheme is monochromatic. You need some warm, complementary colors for balance and to add interest and complexity. A larger and more lively painting (hung lower, as mentioned) and yellow, gold or terracotta pillows, and some books and interesting objects on the coffee table will liven up this nice but rather static and monochromatic area.

I'm thinking your walls have a bit too much red in the beige. if you were up for changing the wall color, I would try to go something with more green and blue.

I think the many different tones of beige are fighting each other: you have more gold walls and curtains, pinkish on the coffee table top and bench, and greyish on the sofa and other table. Also the three tables have different styles.

Thank you everyone !! Would definitely try to change side table and tv table to begin with

I would replace the art over your couch. Do something colorful with just a tad of blue. And it does need to be placed lower on the wall. Then you can work off the art. Pick a color from the art and add a pillow of that color to the couch. I would also replace the end table or do floor lamps on each side of the couch. The drapes might look better if the color was similar to the couch.

No, too beige. The furniture and curtains are all very monochromatic, just shades of pale beige. You need to connect the blues, with perhaps some blue/beige patterned curtains, and also, as ingrid suggests, add in a third, warmer color, such as red, orange, coral, purple -- as in the painting, which definitely should be lowered -- or even a chartreuse green.

I would think about perhaps a warm, wooden coffee table. As Kris mentions, the three tables are different styles, you have one plainer and two more fiddly. I would go for the plainer style, which seems to suit the rest of the room better.

I think your choice of art is wrong for the room: too small, harsh colours, hung too high. I also think the TV table is probably too big and too ornate (and so a bit overwhelming), though it's hard to say without seeing the whole room. For the rest, yes, move the rug a bit under the sofa legs, hem the drapes, and add some accessories to the room. Bring in touches of different colours to bring the room to life (rather than a very bright painting) -- here, the metallic glint under the TV, the green cushion, the flowers.

You need to paint the walls first. The color does nothing for your furnishings.

Once you get your wall color right it will feel much better. Then you can look for some art!

Heavens. I would not introduce a grey beige to the room.

Gray is not the answer to every question. As others have said, the blue needs to be repeated in the room. Some pattern could be nice and bigger art or more art on the wall behind he sofa. Otherwise, get rid of the blue rug and continue with the beige if you like the idea of a room without any contrast.

I agree with replacing and lowering the art...something larger. Hang it 5-6 inches above the sofa.

A warm gray would look very nice in this room, or a soft Gray/ blue. The tones in the furniture are what dictate this unless you are planning on new .

Played around and I think I like this art better

It’s wrong to call SW agreeable gray “ gray” . It’s actually a warm taupe. I care nothing for Trend colors at any rate, if a color works in your space then use it no matter what is in or out! It’s just a color!

Before we get into paint and such can we see the other sides of the room. What is it adjacent to? What other colors are you using in the home?

Please understand that I’m not saying you have to paint your room this color! There’s no way for anyone to be certain a specific color will look right in any given space when doing it from a monitor screen! I just feel the wall color you now have is not doing you any favors.

The Buddha is beautiful, especially with the wall gold like that. Your mockup looks wonderfully rich.

With that approach, a low gold bowl for the coffee table, perhaps with crystals in it?

For me, art is always personal and not part of the furnishings, so it does not have to "go" with anything. But it does has to be something meaningful that speaks to you, and is something you really like/love. Which piece of art do you really like, which makes you smile when you enter the room?

Regardless of which print you choose, do add some more blue and some patterns -- like the blue-and-white pillow and the blue (taller, which is important) lamp lyn suggests, and if you add an orange pillow as you have, try to make it an orange print. Or orange and blue. Something like this, which is on sale at Pottery Barn right now,

    https://www.potterybarn.com/products/gayle-paisley-lumbar-pillow-cover/?isx=0.1.22436

I like Rina's suggestion of a gold bowl too. Which makes me wonder -- in your original post, where you wrote, "This is our living room i want this place to look more inviting", by more inviting, do you also mean "warmer"? I do think warmer is the right direction for this room, because blue can skew cold or cool, which might be part of what you're seeing/feeling.

I love your blue carpet and how it works with your furniture. I agree that your art above the sofa is too small/high. But what I first noticed was the curtains. I would go with a solid color ( maybe trimmed with that beautiful blue) and make sure that they are more substantial. They look wimpy as is ( remove the ties)

Art is personal so start looking for large pieces that resonate with you. Here are different styles and subjects:

Your first line of action should be to remove the furniture that is doing nothing for the room. The bench to the left of sofa on the angled wall, remove it from there. Center that sofa on the straight part of the wall if you choose to keep it there. I’m assuming ya there because there is no room for the TV on the window wall unless it’s crammed in the corner. Consider flipping that float the sofa in front of window with a great sofa table behind it . Center the TV on the other wall. Lose the persons chair it serves no purpose and looks out of scale with the rest of your furniture. The plant on the stool in the corner, lose it too. It isn’t helping . The console cabinet shoved to left of window ... again??? Let me see if i can put together some ideas for you. Measurements will enable me to make a to scale floor plan for you. Otherwise i can guess.

Aha : ) . With the other pictures you've posted, with all the additional beige and brown I can see, I can see why you'd be concerned about too much blue, or any other color, in the room. Embrace the blue to make the most of your sentimental family rug. Blue works beautifully with beige and brown, livening them up. I would add a lumbar pillow with blue to the suzani chair, and definitely find curtains with a blue print. Perhaps these,

    https://www.potterybarn.com/products/adya-suzani-print-drape/

But extend the curtain rods at least six inches beyond the casing and let the panels hang down on each side of the window, obscuring as little glass as possible when you don't need them drawn.

That was very helpful beckysharp and i love the curtain from potterybarn , they are a bit expensive for me so will look similar pattern on a budget ! thank you

    P Ra, I'm glad that was helpful : ) .

Yes, the PB curtains are expensive, I just posted them to give you an idea of what you might want to look for. I would check Target, World Market, Bed Bath & Beyond etc. You can also sign up for email newsetters from PB with sale info etc. It's usually around 20 percent.

I would get rid of green curtains.
The couch needs to be more on the rug can the black strip be on other side?
I think the art is matching but not helping the rug stand out. I would do a bland wall color with that blue rug
