Massive blank wall & vaulted ceilings... help!

last modified: 7 years ago

We recently moved into a larger home, and I'm going nuts looking at this huge blank wall that spans between my living room & dining space. I have no idea what to do with it! For now, we just threw a couple pieces we already had up there. I took some pics, including the rest of my living room & dining area. The wall in question has the mountain landscape & cow pictures on it... it case it isn't obvious :)

Any ideas?

I had to go on my computer to add the photos, thanks! They're up there now.

Even when you have taller walls, you decorate the human space and connect art with the furniture below it. You need something much bigger to replace both pictures . Hang the biggest so that the bottom of the frame is about a foot above the back of the sofa. The art on the wall to the left of the landscape is also too high.

I do like the cow but it is too small. You might be able to do a collage with the cow to cover more of the wall.

    Do you have more art?

Looks like what you do have is hung too high.

    A few suggestions

Center the sofa in the niche and take out that end table that is dwarfed in there

Add sconces on the sides for lighting

Center the loveseat in the other niche and add a 27" tall lamp

Center art over the loveseat and lower that art on the sidewall

The area could use some type of area rug and a flexible nesting coffee table that can be moved as needed

I would add some type of drapery panels behind the sofa to finish the area.

5-5-75 is a good general rule of thumb that will get you by in most situations. Hang pieces centered 5' above the floor or 5" above furniture. Pieces should be no wider than 75% of the width of the furniture they hang above. Decorate below the 8-9 foot level where the people live.

You don't have to fill the wall between living and dining. Think of each area as a little vignette. Create one for each sofa. And lower all of your art.

For the sofa on the big wall, I'd pull it out and put a sofa table behind it with art and a couple of lamps.

That little niche by the stairs is a mess. Let me see what I can do with that.

In a room this size, you can't get away with small stuff. Your lamps are too small and so are your little picture frames. I even cleared the bottom shelf on your end table and replaced the stuff with a simple stack of books.

If you want to display family photos, do a gallery wall--a grouping of photos that add up to more than the sum of its parts. Rules: none of those little collage frames for snapshots. Make sure the photos are compelling. No school pictures. Candid shots are best.

I moved your sofa out, added a sofa table, a large square canvas and taller lamps. Also a rug to help define the space. That keeps it all in this room and separates it from the dining area.

OK, the niche by the stair isn't as much of a mess as I thought. You did a nice job on the gallery above, but the shelves are just too dark and cluttered. I suggest you look for a wowser accent piece for that spot, something with closed storage so you can hide all the little stuff.

Start looking for bigger art. Those little pieces are lost in this space.

If you have a low traffic house I would add a decorative room divider to close off access to the kitchen near the dining area. Scoot the sofa to the right, or if you need more seating, leave it where it is and add a chair. To visually break the wall, I would add a sturdy wall shelf to use as an end table (if you opt for a chair). For a quick, inexpensive wall art fix, I would go to paperarts.com and find some decorative paper to cut & frame and hang in a random pattern across the sofa and then a special piece above the wall shelf. Lastly, put the cows over the dining table. If you have a high traffic house, forget it.

Okay, big whoopsie on my part. The cow is over the dining table, I meant to suggest the landscape art go over the dining table. The bovine needs find greener pastures. He'd be fun in a bathroom. :)

Would It work to do a built in desk for the niche by the stairs... or a wine rack? it looks like it will be hard to do much that relates to the rest of the room so maybe make it usable on its own?

I like grovers idea of a sofa table. I plan on using one once I remodel. Currently I have my Christmas ornaments in storage boxes behind my sofa, though not visible, I will be camouflaging with the table. Lots of photos online but can't get them to load. :(
