Remember--it isn't just a matter of black or white. There are other color choices--not unlimited, but there are others.

Are you planning to change the carpet or the wall color? I actually quite like the rail. I wonder if changing other elements will help freshen up the look of the whole without touching the railing.

If you have the money, it might be best to have a new railing installed that you envision and have this one removed and sold? It seems like it could make several sets of porch step hand railings and there is a need for that in many areas for Sr Citizens homes, chair ramps etc as they modify to continue to live in their homes.

Yes, we are updating the decor. We are going to repaint the hallways soon (this will make a huge difference) and have taken the carpet out from the staircase as it was in a terrible state.

No - we’ll not be replacing the rail. Although if I were to, I think the idea of donating is a really great one.

Top it with a wooden hand rail. Paint the bottom white trim to match the wall.
