Double doors don't work anyway because where do you put the light switches?

the double doors that I wanted so badly for our Master Bedroom.

In a house, there is nothing I have ever regretted more than double doors into a master bedroom. Thank your builder for that one.

We had double doors going into the MBR, MB and MCloset. Also the pantry. Never regretted. Our opening were 3/0 which is 38". Downside for some, you cannot lock. Switch placement was not a problem.

Kid in bedroom #2 gets to hear all your bathroom and bedroom activities ...

Interior double doors do not seal very well either - for sound. Thanks bry for the laugh. I am 100% with bry - this time.

I have not had an interior double door that had a good substantial closure. I have had plenty of exterior double doors that were fine - but then one was fixed separately so they didn't really open at the same time except for special occasions which usually means moving furniture. Current build - zero double doors anywhere.

So back to the email. Is your builder saying that one of the proposed double doors into the bedroom is stationary? The door plan is a hot mess. No one goes around having doors that fill the width of a hallway like that. You can never open them completely - IMO it ruins the idea of a double door. They are right to change to a single door but how did they get that so wrong? The closet and entry door conflict in bedroom 2 is poor design also. Not to mention the lack of sound barrier (ie closet) in such a big house between master bedroom and bedroom #2. No wonder the son was coming through the double doors to see what was going on....

Not to mention showers and toilets are not perfectly quiet - and that wall shared with the master bath is the "bed" wall with typical design. All in a bedroom (secondary) that looks 17 feet wide.

I'd be thrilled with THAT news. Double at a master is virtually always a regret. With kids in the house I'd want a locking SINGLE.

Whenever I see double doors to a bedroom I think someone has an eating disorder.

I think double doors into closets are fine, you don't have to wonder what's hanging way back at either end. So go with their resizing for the double doors in the closets.

For the master bed, or other bedrooms... it really is more convenient to have a single door that locks easily. I hadn't even thought about the sound dampening factor (but thanks, Bry, for the laugh).

The entryway to the master can be just as, even more, attractive, with a single door.

(I remember my very first house plan, before I went to the log company, and before I'd talked to a single person -- I drew up my "dream home" on paper. It had double doors to my master. One of those things I found when cleaning up my old house, and I'm keeping it for the laughs all around, not just for the double door...)

Agree with the consensus about replacing the double door with a single door for the reasons mentioned.

What bothers me is that they have made this change for every single one of the homes building the model you have and yet they wait to the last minute to inform you of the change. This was a known issue before you signed the contract since they said they made this change with each "Oxford" model. I would be worried that there are other changes that they know about from previous builds and haven't yet informed you. Find out so you have no more surprises. What a poor way for the builder to conduct business.

Count me among the folks that don't like double doors. In fact, I just had my disdain for them confirmed when I was recently on vacation in and the rental house had them.

My question is this...if they have modified it to a single door in ALL the oxford models, why didn’t they tell you this earlier, or modify the floor plan they provided you, so there would be no surprises.

Ditto what ajrmcr said. If they truly want to avoid surprises, they'd have told you this at the beginning, not near the end of the build, AND they would change it on the floorplan!

But I agree with others that you do not really want double doors on a master bedroom. For the foyer closets, tell them you are ok with smaller double doors.
