Coldest September on record for Alberta?

last modified: 7 years ago

Stats will soon be in and it's not gonna be pretty, as we all know, most of September had felt like November! Let me guess, will we be about 10 C below normal or what? Seldom have I had my garden completely stripped and cleaned off at this time of the year, only the cabbage and some of the root vegetables remain. The foliage and tops of perennials and everything else has been razed off and now brewing in the compost pile. This morning the ground was frozen hard and everything looked and totally felt bleak like November! No Indian summer and no autumn harvest weather for the farmers, hopefully such is yet to come, otherwise yet another agricultural disaster is looming. Hate to say this, but we could potentially have a winter that approaches 8 months long if April is a cold one. Anyone planning on going to Hawaii? lol.

I’m hoping October will have at least a few warm days. I have many unfinished projects, and several bulbs I’d like to plant. It is hard to find the time with the shorter days. Looks like I will be out there with winter gear with the upcoming forecast.

Yes, not easy getting things accomplished with conditions like these, though at least it feels a bit better when the sun is shining compared to when it's grey and overcast. Yesterday's +5 C and sunny had almost felt warm, lol. Plenty lots yet to accomplish and hoping for a change in the jet stream that favors us!

Snow is coming down yet again this morning.

Well...on the bright side, could be worse if we had the snow like Calgary got...not sure how far north it went. And we didn't get hit with too much below zero temp. which helps coloring up leaves and makes things pretty. It still sucks..not ready yet with many chores to do which usually last till end of Oct. Feel sorry for farmers...they may as well go to Hawaii now, snow for the weekend and day time high next week below zero...crap!

Next year I’d like to grow some flowering kale or cabbage to take advantage of this cold weather.

A hoophouse would be nice too. We had poor timing with the tomatoes and they all went to mush weeks ago with the sudden cold.

Okay, I guess we're finally in for a warm up, it's about time! For the most part, we pretty much have already endured an entire month of winter ... now, doesn't it seem as if we should instead be approaching the middle of December, rather than it merely being October!

PNR, more and more, I'm getting into conifers and sempervivums and other frost resistant things that remain looking good until covered in a deep blanket of snow.

Fourth or fifth round of accumulating snow in the last month! Goes without saying, but quite the last 30 days to remember! Thankfully, much improved weather soon to follow, hopefully anyways!

    A few more...

Wooly Snow-in-summer & this dianthus/cheddar pink I wish I had the ID for, it's doing very well Perhaps it's 'Firewitch'? -

This young rosa glauca plant has the most vibrant red leaves! A bird planted this -

And the plant which looks the best for me is this sedum 'Autumn Joy'. The leaves didn't even flop over from the cold! -

Here is another angle of it with blue fescue -

Please say your warmer temps are going to come this way! It has been November here since the first day of fall. And rain! We had virtually NO rain from mid-July to mid-September, and then Mother Nature decided to dump it all on us at once. It has hardly stopped raining or snowing since mid-September and then we got almost a food of snow this week.. :( I also have a lot left to do outside, including bulbs to plant. It really doesn't look overly promising for better weather, unless we get September in November!

Marcia, are you sure you're not taking about Edmonton? I didn't realize that your part of the world was also having it rough. It had also been bone dry conditions at my location from mid July until the time the snow started coming down in September. Factoring in the melted snow, I think we've pretty much have gotten six soaking inches of water since then and making a very tough go of things for the farmers with their crops laying in the fields. But, finally, now after what was pretty much a solid month of wintry conditions, the jet stream is to give us a break and there's gonna be plenty lots to catch up on!

PNR, it's nice to have some color and texture to still show for, especially with late summer and autumn having been stolen away as it was. I have a carpet of lychnis coronaria in one location, although weedy, it's striking both in foliage an flower! My sedums are now brewing in the compost pile, normally I leave them, though between the snow and the deer, they stood little chance of continuing on any longer. Your bird planted rosa glauca is brilliantly colored!

They are calling for 15C here tomorrow, and 20C on Wednesday. What a whirlwind of a “fall”!

Marcia, I was out a few weeks ago in my winter jacket frantically planting bulbs until 8pm, just before the snow started to really fall - it’s a real race to find the opportunity to get them in the ground. But so worth it in the spring!

I hope many of us have a chance to get their fall clean up in these next few weeks!

Nothing like that is predicted here, but i hope that a few days with actual sun (what is that light in the sky?) might melt and dry things out enough that i can do some planting.

Oh my god, I saw the news. That's crazy I can't imagine people volenteer to live there!! Forget Hawaii LOL, all you would of had to do was come to Southern Ontario. It was in the high 70's last week with a day or two in he 80's and lots of sun!! Leaves have just started to change colour now. Glad you are getting some weather to make up for it.

Yes, when the weather is cold and nasty, I often say to myself "why do I live this far north!" ... probably, no different than those residing in regions of hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes and floods, etc. Besides, I lovvve the long summer days when the sun goes down well after 10 pm and I'm working outside until 11:30 pm. Also, it's seldom overly hot and that uncomfortable sticky humidity is rare.
