My newest African Violets

Here are a few AV's I've added to my collection this summer, purchasing them as starter plants. I recently moved them up to 3" pots and they're all individually wicked.

This is Psychedelic Rose, showing her first bloom. She is large and it made me so happy to see how loaded with fantasy she is - Wowza!

King's Treasure came to me in bloom and continues to set more flowers. This is one I've been trying to start from a leaf several times with no success so I finally broke down and bid on a plant. Love that shaded rich purple fading into lavender, set off by the white edge. Simply scrumptious!

Likewise having arrived already in bloom is the chimera Sweet Tea. I had a plant a while back but lost it to a mite infestation. These blooms have been open for over a month and a half now and still look good to me:

And finally, one that I bid on labeled "Snegia." I can't find any info on it, description or translation, but I love the outlined white star in the center of the bloom.

These are all living in my new quarantine area, in a separate room far from the rest of my collection, where they'll stay for a few more months until I'm absolutely sure they're healthy - and that the rest of my collection in the main room is healthy once again. No one can say I didn't learn my lesson...dipping over one hundred plants to treat for mites was no fun, let me tell you. The curio cabinet they're in is in front of a north window (not ideal, I know, but all I had available) and my son just added LED strip lighting to supplement what natural light comes from the window, to replace the couple of clamp-on lamps I had been using so I didn't have to turn the plants every single day. Still experimenting at this point with how long to leave those new LED lights on....

EK-Snegiri (E.Korshunova) Snegiri - means bullfinches - red chest birds that migrate to European part of Russia in winter to feed on frozen berries and seeds. They are very pretty when the rest of the forest is covered in snow. That's why the name - of this single large white star with purple red thumbprint.

As usual - bi-color red and white - has more white or more red - depending on the season.

I also grow plants in a North window and another stand is LED. Some varieties love it and others (yellows) just don't grow as well. Have them on timers for less time than for fluorescents about 4-5 hours with some supplemental light from the North window (About six feet away and set back against a side wall). Timing will vary depending on intensity of the light produced. Good growing!

Irina - thank you! I was hoping someone would offer me a description/corrected name (I was pretty sure I didn't have it right.) I will amend my labeling immediately. I love what the plant is named after, too - I can just picture those pretty winter birds after your explanation. :-)

Alabama, thanks for relaying your own experience with growing in that exposure and with LED's. I would imagine I will have to adjust the length of time the lights are on based on the time of year. When the sun is at it's high point in the year, the window gets much more bright light at morning and evening than it does right now. It could be tricky to make AV's happy long term, esp. those not first along the window side of the shelf. So far I am not using a timer, but manually turning the lights on and off, while keeping watch. Some are still leaning towards the window in spite of the lights, but not all. Most are growing nice and flat, so I think you're right that some plants will be happy there but there may be some I'll have to move to the fluorescent lighted stand eventually. It's an interesting experiment, anyway.
