Expanding to a 2 car garage, should we keep breezeway?

Hello, we recently bought a home with only a one car garage that we would like to make into a two car.

I want to have our contractors create something that looks good. Do people like the look of a breezeway connected to the garage, or would it be better to tear it down and place the garage right next to the house? We would lose a window on the side of the house.

Does anyone have any suggestions for garage designs that would elevate the look of our house?

I like the breezeway. It creates a sense of separation. If you make the garage bigger and remove the breezeway it will make the house look over taken by the garage.

If you have the room to add a two car garage to the breezeway, keep the breezeway! It is a charming part of your home!

Just have a contractor attach a second single car garage to the existing garage, pulled back from the garage facade by about 2 feet. Then do the wider driveway, and 2 nicer looking garage doors.

A breezway is not only handy for shedding outdoor gear in bad weather, it can also be a nice little eating space during summertime. I've seen some pretty breezeways with plants, shutters, colorful small table and chairs, etc. Or an attractive mudroom. In any case, consider it an extra room and add your other garage to the right of the current one for all the reasons mentioned previously.

Thank you everyone, I do agree that the breezeway should be left intact. Any suggestions for garage designs? I think I would possibly like to incorporate some wood or stones, maybe creating a matching front porch.

This is where an architect can really help you with designs that enhance the curb appeal of your home. That might include rethinking the fenestration.

Be careful with sticking stuff on. Stone or similar detritus tacked on to the front of a house looks silly. OTOH, if it wraps around all sides of the garage as a foundation, has a purpose for being there and tells a story of that then that could look good.
