Basement Bathroom Layout

Hi There!

We are putting a bathroom in our basement. Right now it is an empty room with rough-ins that don’t make sense to me....but I digress. There is easy access to a crawl space under the area to reroute some/all fixtures (its only money right?! ). The only thing I have purchased so far is a 60 inch vanity that I am guessing will need to go on the left wall as you come in because no need to move the water if I don’t need to. The toilet is right in front of the water main so that will need to move somewhere. We’re having a hard time deciding what type of shower to put in and where it should go. Where should the toilet go? Another thing that is throwing me off is that the access to the water shut off for the whole house is in the back left corner so there will need to be some sort of a panel-extra points if we can make it look good-built in of some sort?

At this point there is no bedroom in the basement but we will likely be adding one in the nearish future. We have four children who will likely want more space (not sharing rooms with younger sibs) as they get older. We do use the basement frequently, just not for sleeping.

    Some questions:

    How high off the ground is the water shut off valve?

    What is the dimension from the left wall to the linen closet wall? (33.5+28+___)

    Can the door be moved?

    Early to say, but a 60" vanity is very large for a bathroom that isn't getting regular usage. We have 48" in our master that has two banks of drawers and a decent sized sink for me and DH... Do you have to keep the 60" vanity?

      @damiarain we will be keeping the vanity. I think it will fit, and when we have teenagers living in the basement it will be nice to have the double vanity and drawer/cupboard space. The water shut off it probably 5’ off the ground. At present the only door into the bathroom is the main one. The linen closet is not built out yet, it was just the idea we had to hide the support post. Sorry I’m not sure which measurement you are asking for… Each square is 4 inches and everything is drawn to scale if that helps! Thank you.

      Thanks for the answers. What’s the distance between the support post and the left wall? And the right wall? And the bottom wall? (Trying to make sure the post is placed in the right spot in my layout =)

      Thank you so much! Here is a picture… Hopefully it will help? The far edge of the post to the stud on the wall with the door is 24” and the far edge of the post to the stud on the left wall if you are about to exit the bathroom is 29”.

      There's no shower rough in currently? If so, that means that you'll have to hire people and that opens up possibilities for also re-locating the toilet rough in. Keep in mind that it's easy to change the framing and drywall if you'd like to re-locate the door. A 28" door is pretty narrow.


      Have you seen any bathroom pictures you've liked on houzz? You can look at bathrooms pictures and you might see a layout that you like.

      @stevegrimes I don’t see shower rough ins, BUT....there is some rough drywall thrown up on the walls (which will come down) so there could be a shower stub behind the drywall. I should figure that out. I have poured over pictures and have pieces of several saved but have not seen many with my exact layout. Great advice on the door! Thank you!

      checking in again. (bump!) If your drawing is to some scale you could create paper cutouts for the vanity, toilet, and shower to experiment with layouts. Kohler has a layout planner too.


      There are probably some valid design ideas. You may want a layout that shows vanity and shower as showcase items when you open the door with a toilet hidden by a wall.

      Thanks Steve! Great ideas! I will check our the Koehler website ASAP! And great idea about the cutouts! I’ll work on that too. I discovered Murphy bookcases and thought that might be a great way to hide the main shut off and have a little storage. I wonder if I am crazy to put a 60” vanity in a basement bath. I think there is enough room and it would be nice when the teens are getting ready down there.

      Thanks for the help. Wanted to come back and add pics of the finished product for anyone who might stumble upon this post. I LOVE the bathroom. Not super jazzed about having to leave access for the water main but it is what it is.

      Nice! It looks like the vanity fit just fine. The shower also looks to be a comfortable size. Is that a Kohler shower receptor?

      Very nice! I’m trying to pick my basement bathroom finishes now! What did you use for the floors? And can you provide the details of the vanity? Mine will be a 36”.

      Vanity is from Costco. It’s sold out but there are 2 nice options for 36” right now. If your local warehouse has it in stock it’s usually at least $100 cheaper. https://www.costco.com/CatalogSearch?dept=All&keyword=36”+vanity
