Budget is first. As in something outside the standard stick framing construction practices will cost significantly more.

ICF is a specialized construction technique, and as Sophie notes, it has a higher first cost than conventional stick frame construction.

I don't think you're going to find a local architect with a lot of experience designing ICF homes, but you will likely find a builder that specializes in ICF homes within a reasonable radius of your project.

Bottom line: For an ICF project, pick the builder first and let them recommend an architect or designer they've worked with successfully.

Search for a local architect with experience in ICF construction. Most ICF manufacturers have extensive standard details that are easy for an architect to follow, its not rocket science. I did one house with an ICF basement and a five story hotel.

Why don't you post this on the ICF forum?

@Mark--nothing in residential construction is "rocket science," but, with the volume of disaster-describing posts on houzz.com as evidence, it's sure easy to screw up in design as well as construction.
