lighting in bedroom

I'm struggling finding a sconce style for my two upstairs bedrooms. the rooms are small, and currently have no lighting except for two sconces in each room. We are fixing that by adding two can lights to each room's ceiling. these rooms are a little dark and need as much light as they can get!

The way the sconces are currently positioned is the smack dab in the middle of each wall. which feels a little weird to me because it limits what we can do in there furniture wise. but we are planning to keep the current placement.

I'm trying to find something that looks very modern and pretty but it's not super obtrusive. It seems like most sconces hang out into the room a fair amount and since the rooms are small I'd like to keep the sconce lighting pretty flat against the walls. but I also prefer the sconces to be a focal point of the design, and not just blend into the background. is this foolhardy? there are some really subtle flat LED lights that don't stick out very far, but they are pretty plain and don't really stand out as a design element.

the walls are being painted "Misty cove" by Glidden which is a very pale blue. the floors will be dark reddish brown engineered hardwood.
