Was it large or small flowers? Shape? Color?

Right now have several bell shaped ones like Rugoochi blooming. It might have been a type 2 on its second bloom or a type 3 that was pruned back and is reblooming . The most common now is sweet autumn with lots of tiny white flowers or the similarly flowered native C. virginiana.

I have Rugoochi and sweet Autumn and love them. This plant had large , at least 5 inch, lavender/ pink flowers covering the established vine. I have never seen anything like it at this time of the year, just wondered what I've been missing. Earlier in the season it would be a common sight.

Sherry, if you could take a photo, you might get some possible IDs. IME, how well reblooming happens is a combo of cultivar, site, and pruning. So it might or might not behave the same way everywhere, but a photo is more likely to help with an ID.

Thanks for all of your input here. Your answers got me to explore a little more, wish I would have done that before I posted here. After some more research I think I may have answered my own question. I found Comtesse du Bouchard and I think this is probably what I saw. It just took me by surprise when I saw it and I unfortunately I don’t remember where it was. Like I stated above I’ve never seen a large flowered clematis in full bloom this late in the season here in 5a, it’s appears this variety does exactly that.

Sherry, my Piilu aka Little Duckling is reblooming right now, so that is another possibility for you. Its spring color isn’t as intense as this and has a more noticeable stripe.
