I would think your referring to Maitland Smith. This is a company founded by Paul Maitland Smith. He has been well-known and respected in the home furnishings industry since 1957, when he earned a solid reputation as a London-based antiques dealer and purveyor of reproduction furniture. By 1979 he had emigrated to Hong Kong and began manufacturing furniture and decorative accessories under the name Maitland-Smith, sourcing product from Hong Kong, Thailand, China, and the Philippines. Today Maitland Smith pieces are still being manufactured in the Philippines. He also started Theodore Alexander.

Unless you could provide a photo of the piece with the identification of "Maitland and Smith" as the manufacturer, then I would doubt very seriously that your Great Grandmother would have purchased a Maitland Smith piece of furniture, as she would have been before his time.

I have several Maitland Smith pieces and they are finely crafted wood and leather pieces. My best friend has a great apothecary chest in embossed leather. I have never seen a metal piece like that associated with M-S. I am not expert and i know there was a substantial company shift in the 90s I believe but not sure metal pieces were a part of this redirection.
