Cabinet Maker Suggestions

I’m in the process of building a home. My builder recommends that we use a custom cabinet maker. However, I imagine there are really nice semi custom cabinet companies that I am just not familiar with that can provide just as nice or nicer cabinets for much less. Does anyone have any suggestions for cabinet manufacturers? Or am I crazy to not go custom? Also, I want the look of painted cabinets, but don’t want to deal with the fracture lines that are seen in painted cabinets overtime from wood contraction. Is there a heavy duty product that eliminates this issue? Or is it best I just stick with stain? Thanks for the advice.

We found that custom cabinets weren't any. more expensive than semi-custom. Obviously depending on your area this may not always be the case but we were pleasantly surprised! Wood tone cabinets are trending up, so definitely worth considering!

Your question has so many variables to it. It depends what you are looking for. Some small custom shops may not have the ability to do all that a large factory shop can do. For example, frameless cabinetry instead of framed (which one do you want? your photo appears to show frameless), or a catalyzed conversion varnish baked-on factory finish.

If you do not want seams to show on your painted cabinet doors, you need to select an MDF door option. These are typically an upgrade.

I see seams in painted cabinets as a sign of quality.

I had custom cabinets built, and they may have been more expensive than semi-custom - I didn't price out another option, so I don't know for sure. I DO know that my cabinet maker was able to give me exactly what I wanted, and the installation was perfect. My kitchen is not big, so I wanted to make efficient use of every inch. There are several things in my kitchen that might not have been possible if I hadn't gone custom.

I know several custom cabinet makers in Ohio and Michigan. Their work is not comparable to semi-custom. Amazing stuff.

We had custom cabinets made for less than anything else we could buy premade. As mentioned, the custom ones are much better than the store bought.

Here is a great article about cabinetry that you might want to reference:

    Choosing the Right Kitchen Cabinetry

I am currently finishing a gut remodel of my condo including kitchen and two baths.

I used a custom cabinet maker recommended by my designer. I checked the quality of his work by viewing two places he had done recently.

Like AnnKH, I don't know if the price was less than what I might have paid for semi-custom because my design was quite expensive in terms of wood used (quarter sawn white oak); inset cabinets and LOTS of customization which would have driven up the price for a semi-custom line to probably more than I paid.

The advantage of custom is that you get exactly what you want. As I was working with a small size, this was more critical to me than it might be for someone working in a large kitchen space where you can afford to not eke out every bit of function within that space.

I am not sure what is special about the doors you posted as they seem pretty standard tall cabinet/pantry doors but perhaps I am missing something. I have a few doors on tall cabinets.

Thanks everyone for your input. What are MDF doors? You all are probably right about the price difference not being much, so I should just go custom. I’m from Albuquerque and know someone who used a custom cabinet company to do their pantry doors, like my picture, and they didn’t know what to do. Plus I haven’t seen it done often so I think it’s still pretty new here. I understand the thought that they seam is quality, but overtime it makes the cabinets like bad as that’s where the paint begins to chip. I will try to look for baked on options. Does anyone know the term for this? Thanks

Kristin, thanks for the article. I discovered what MDF means.
