Have you considered removing the deck? Or building a small balcony just outside the room that seems to have glass doors? This really calls for an architect since there are many choices you have to make the front more inviting and coherent. It all depends on budget, of course.

hgal is right. Does the deck ever get used? Is it off the kitchen or what?

If the deck was gone you still have a front door very near the garage doors. You might add an awning to give it more presence.

I just found houses with second-story balconies. Whatever you do, try to link the materials you use to the garage doors, which will become more prominent if you remove your large deck. (They can also be painted to blend in with the façade color) If you're having a real deck, rather than just a balcony, then it should extend to the edge of the garage door on the right, which would open up your entryway. Again, an architect is needed for something like this.

Thanks for the feedback. We want to keep the deck or a poration of it. the deck gives us views to the water located in the front of the house. I have thought about shortening the deck to end at the right corner of the garage. My husband loves the deck so I’m hoping to get as many ideas as possible before we make a decision. The house was remolded and a large addition was added before we purchased the home. It looks like two homes right now so I’m honestly lost on the best approach.

I would suggest removing the shutters. They aren’t the same on the addition. Then consider painting the blue addition to a color that matches the brick. I would also consider some major landscaping on the right side to draw your eye to the door. Also, maybe a more eye catching door color and some decorative details around the door...large house numbers etc...

If you want to keep the deck then paint it dark gray so it won't stand out so much. Without major construction you are sort of stuck with a receding front door. Concentrate on making the interior of your home spectacular.

Don't leave the garbage can out. The whole area under the deck needs to be kept clean.

What is your budget and how extensive is the work you are willing to do? I certainly would not reduce my deck space for the sake of a more prominent entry area.

I agree with others that unifying the color and look of the shutters, deck, exterior wall materials/colors will certainly help.

I would also put a path/walkway - brick? from the door out and beyond the deck at least as far as where the grass ends and widen it a bit when it comes out from under the deck. Then in the wider part that is not under the deck, flank it with tall potted plantings. The eye will go to the planting area and be funneled down the walkway to the front door. Make sure the path and the door have lighting so your entrance is obvious at night.

You can do a few things to help draw attention to the front door. Decorate like it is the front door—so yes to the large planters, and think about keeping the light by the side of the door on (that is a light, right?). You could also add additional downlights to highlight the walls on each side of the door. Finally—perhaps update part of the driveway to turn it into a path leading towards the door (different material and color than the driveway).

The colour difference spoils the lines of the house. Remove the shutters, but add clapboard in a contrasting colour) to the gable. Replace the current porch and its gangly legs. Replace it with a smaller balcony. The balcony support and the roof support over the door should mirror one another.

I would recommend doing a new paint job and maybe some more greenery wouldn’t hurt I also think you should add some more furniture there to make it look more welcoming

I say paint the door yellow. Add bold house numbers,a bright finish light fixture and planters with seasonal flowers. Those blue planters as suggested by leelee look really good.

I would start by painting the door white. Then hang a seasonal wreath on it and keep the light on all the time as suggested. Perhaps you could tape out a rounded portion of the concrete from just right of the garage door up to the first post on the right and stain the concrete in a stone pattern so it looks more like an entry than an extension of the driveway. There are all sorts of stencils you can buy. https://www.surecretedesign.com/product/concrete-stencils/ Use different colors of concrete stain so they look more realistic.

Perhaps you could also add a flag holder to the porch post on the right and put up seasonal flags to draw attention to that portion of the house. Another option would be to add a 4th post to the right of the garage door and add hanging baskets on that and the post on the right to create the feel of an entry.

Thank you all for the ideas! I’ve been able to pull from the suggestions ideas for quick wins and plans to consider for more long term. I agree we have a lot of work on the landscaping out front. We just moved In a month ago and have been remodeling the inside ever since. I appreciate all your feedback!

If you don’t have an investment in the deck I’d remove it.

I would paint the deck the color of gray siding and paint door and shutters white, also add more prominent molding around the door. Define a walkway to door with plants and cobblestones.

What room(s) are the two windows to the right of the door? Would you be able to turn one of those into an entrance door, and put a window where the current door is? (And then add a walkway/landscaping/door awning)...
