I've only grafted with older plants. I've noticed that older "flesh" seems to take better rather than the new green areas for me. It won't hurt to try though! Try it on one. Good experiment time.

I have only grafted on plants that have bloomed and are in active growth, have do it no later then Sept. You have more sun and heat later then that.

Thanks for your comments.. Our day and night temperatures are dropping slightly and all my plants are responding with new bursts of growth. We are just leaving the months of disgustingly hot and the plants are breathing sighs of relief.. Maybe I'll experiment purely to have the learning experience.

Age of cutting stock and/or scion stock would not necessarily be the factor, it will be the size of the plants being used. With them all growing at different rates it is hard to go from age.

One of the biggest factors (you are in Hawaii) is what stage the plants are in for growth. Both the Rootstock and Scion stock should be in active growth for good adhesion.

W/O going into "how' to graft. Softer growth which would be towards the tip or including the tip can be used as well. The size (diameter of) does not matter too much as long as the scion used has atleast 2-3 nodes on it.

I have grafted onto 1yr. old stock as well as used 1yr. old stock as scion material. Using the top growth w the leaves intact works well, just need to make sure good humidity and snip the leaves in half.

You will have fun experimenting. Always going to have loses, but if you have a good size rootstock, you can reuse it again by slicing off 1/4" and place another scion on top for another go.
