Do you hate it enough to put down inexpensive vinyl: sheet, selfstick tile, LVT?

That is a horrid floor... :( So for me you have several options, in order of cost, low to high:

1) A cheap rug (its a bit room, might work out more expensive to get a good kitchen-friendly one?

2) Paint it. I've seen this done to good effect. Getting the right paint is important - definitely give it a floor varnish layer over the top too.

3) Laminate over the top - either the roll or laminate or fake wooden flooring. Its easy to do so you can do it yourself and when the budget is tight I always visit the store and see whats on offer.

4) Scree over the top and have polished concrete. Looks beautiful.

I think I'd go for option 3 personally.

Yes, that is a hideous tile! If it were me I'd try painting it rather than buying a rug to cover it. I actually think painting it will be the lowest cost option. Somewhere on this board there are a few people who have stenciled and painted their bathroom tiles and it turned out fantastic!

the floor is really nice....better than the awful putty tan you see more often. And the larger tiles give it a southwest vibe. go for large iron hardware, get some additional color :blue/red/greens in patterned mats or rug. Paint the wall around door/window a fairly bold color. Install an iron rod above window with a valance. Saying that, tile is not a personal favorite for floors, so if you can live with the cabinets and have a layout that works[cannot see it entirely], probably new counters/applicances/floor, after more money saved, will do more to upgrade the space.

Hi. We have terra-cotta reddish-orangey tiles in the kitchen, dining room, and foyer and we dislike it. We’re thinking ab doing a floating floor on it - one of those that is 8mm thick and supposedly the grout lines will not show. Just commenting on this thread as we are also interested in what others advise. Thanks.

Maybe if you used Grout Renew to lighten up the grout you might hate it less?

I am shocked (!) at the vehemence towards a poor sad floor. I never knew that an inanimate object could arouse such passionate feelings in people. It's a floor - it gets stepped on, horrible things are dropped on it, it's probably the dirtiest thing in the house, . . . I didn't like the floor in my house when we bought it, but I waited until the floor was almost unusable before I changed it. Fortunately my floor was only linoleum so it didn't take as long as it will for the "well made" tiles to conk out. Same for my laminate countertop. Waited until it wore out before I changed it. I've said this on other threads, "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or Do without” . No wonder the economy is booming - lots of people spending lots of money.

I actually like your cabinets as is, and signs are they’re also coming back into fashion, so I wouldn’t paint them. I might paint the floor as a stopgap measure. Perhaps get a single similar tile (or a couple) at Home Depot and experiment with paint to see if it could work for you?

What is the size of the individual tiles? How raised are they relative to the grout lines?

emmydoll81: You're right about keeping the cabinets as they are. Id the boxes are sturdy and the layout suits you, it would be simple (and much, much less expensive to swap out the doors and drawer fronts; that's what I did (stripped the old finish and applied new clear finish. So keep the wood as it is.

Painting that tile floor is a real trailer-park solution. A plain paint color (especially that fills in the grout joints) will just draw attention to that hillbilly fix. Plus, in order to get it to stick properly, you'll have to strip every square millimeter of that floor. Plus, plus, it won't wear evenly. Horrible idea.

Just live with the floor, possibly with a rug over it.
