Cabinet hardware mistake?

last modified: 8 years ago

Feeling a little nervous on this finished and permanent project... thoughts on cabinet hardware?!?! Is the Black too stark? If so- what do I DO!! Non standard centers at 5 5/16”.

To me, the hardware is a little too busy for the drawers.

I’d first remove everything from the countertops and step back for another look. I’d also change the island pendants to something a little smaller with less contrast. With less going on in the room, I think the hardware would look better.

I agree, not crazy about the antique-y look of the hardware.

Pretty kitchen!! I like the hardware. You could spray paint it a softer color if you think it's too dark and it's a tricky size.

I like them! Nice contrast with the white cabinets, and picks up the black portions of your appliances! You may feel this is too jarring because it’s new and you’re not used to it yet. Enjoy! It’s a gorgeous kitchen.

Thank you Debbi- I loved the fun shape and the knobs were perfect- found these pulls to go with them. The cabinets are hard to find hardware that fits so I was pleased this all “worked”... I’ve been looking for two years. These were the only ones I fully liked. I love the pendants and the contrast there. I was trying to tie in with the pendants and dark floors. The shape looks French which I loved. The backsplash is “handcrafted” tile so it looks irregular- a bit “antique” which is why I thought the hardware “went” with the big picture. Every thing I have read reccomends “silver” with white. I basically went with what I liked- but now am afraid I made I bad choice... but those are what led me to the decision. Everyone I asked prior to install “liked” them and basically I was tired of looking (again 2 years of thinking about it...) I guess I am afraid it looks messy? I don’t know

    Thank you Laurel.

I like the dark hardware! My daughter, whose kitchen is very similar to yours, had brushed nickel handles on her white cabinets and just changed them out to a dark color too. (She picked a dark brown to tie in with her wood floors.) The contrast on yours is very nice and a pleasant change from all the gray and white color schemes in so many kitchens.

They just look old to me...dated, and busy. I generally don't like dark hardware on white cabs anyway, but I have seen some that were okay. I would replace them.

I think the knobs are too close to the corners of the cabinets, but the hardware is fine. Stop fretting and enjoy.

Pic of my kitchen so of course I love it!

Interesting creatures in your pendant lights.

Haha- real life pics. Junk on counters- Halloween decor in lights ;)

Just because someone says the you should use brushed nickel with white doesn't mean they are right... there are just as many pictures of white kitchens wit darker pulls as well...

Not that it matters but I think they look great and if you took that much time to find something you like then everyone needs to zip it and let you enjoy your new kitchen!

Stop worrying about it and enjoy Halloween!

I might have chosen simpler hardware, but the black is five and repeats the lantern finish.

I don't think the color is the problem. I think they're too busy for your already very busy kitchen. Your doors aren't simple - they're quite intricate, and to me, I would prefer a simpler handle to balance it out, not to mention you have a ton of stuff on your counters and walls. But I'm also one that likes simpler styles so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I like them! Certainly, give them a chance, but I think you’ll be fine. Your kitchen is lovely and I like the colors.

It looks better decluttered and reorganized. Thank you all for the feedback and encouragement I will give them a few weeks and re-evaluate! (The “junk” on the wall is kids art and sight words. Temporary life stage “decorating”)

It IS a beautiful kitchen. Perhaps just live with the hardware for a while?

The hardware looks good, complements the pendants.

I am worried about your pest problem ... those are big spiders ... you might want to dust the pendants once in a while! ;-)

I used to have ghosts hanging around my pendants!

The black is fine but the shape is Early American. Popular in the 50s and 60s on knotty pine kitchens. I would like something more streamlined. Kitchen is very pretty though. Can’t tell enough about functionality but you didn’t ask about that. Nice job.

Flo the shape is fleur de lis (they look French). The functionality is great! I had some help from you on the layout I believe and added that prep sink to have a bomb.com work triangle

Your cabinets are beautiful- I love all the detail. I like the dark hardware as well. If considering something else, I think I’m in the camp of just something a little simpler in style for the hardware and let the cabinet details be the star.

" Flo the shape is fleur de lis (they look French) "

I agree with Flo - they looked early American to me too. That was why I had said they looked "dated". They reminded me of the hardware in my grandmother's pine kitchen. Like this...

Still, if you are happy with them, then keep them.

Your kitchen with knobs and pulls looks really great, really. Don't get buyers remorse or try to second guess yourself. You did a fabulous job!

It's understated compared to the refrigerator handles often used on the doors and drawers in recent posts. What you've chosen looks perfect.

I think it looks fine. I would get a more interesting rug, like a Dash and Albert/Annie Selke. What do you plan to display in the upper cabs? I would really think that through. I'd also remove everything from the fridge and consider art instead of the big clock.

Just remember to enjoy this stage of your life with your kids. When our city's hockey team finally made the playoffs one year, our boys made paper jerseys with all the players numbers. We had them hanging from the ceiling in one of our rooms for months. They were strung one after the other from corner to corner. Our house never looked like a magazine, but the kids lived here and had fun. The decorating will eventually happen. Our kids are 17 and 20 and we are finally finishing what we started 19 years ago.

Flo yes I was getting cold feet/buyers remorse! Just googled “early american style” and I LOVE that style... and I love vintage fun elements in general ... European Inspired is my favorite :) just didn‘t know the “terminology” I suppose! We just spent time in Isle Sur Le Sourge and southern France and saw a lot of this shape on antique furniture. But it was the color I was concerned about. And YES I needed some reassurance about them :) Thanks for your help as always.

I was in a friend’s kitchen last month and saw this sign: “Please excuse the mess. We’re busy making memories”. Please add this sign above the clock and change nothing else - keep the kids’ art on the walls and weekly schedules on the fridge. I love your kitchen as-is.

I think I understand what your saying.

The hardware doesn't match the cabinet style but the dark color is great. I like your black hardware it matches your pendants pulls the design together. Personally MY chrome hardware doesn't match my cabinet style but it matches the my vintage chrome hardware "theme" of 3 ridges. My hardware which is in 3 finishes hasn't gotten a single compliment from anyone but I like the sizes and each piece serves my thick fingers well. Your hardware looks comfy for the fingers, too.

Ya know what, if you love them, that is really all that matters. You are the one using it everyday! The kitchen is very nice. I commend you for asking, because it is hard getting all this "help"! lol Just enjoy it and stop second guessing yourself. We lived in Brussels for 3 years and traveled all over Europe and so enjoyed all the beautiful artistry of each area and of course, France is amazing in all areas. Brussels also has some amazing architecture along with art and unbelievable history. Enjoy your kitchen and your memories of travel experiences. I'll bet you make some great meals too! Can't beat French cooking! Of course, the Belgians say they taught the French all they know and THEY CREATED THE original "French fry". Oh those Belgian French fries (frittes) are sooooo good! Makes my mouth water just writing about them.
