WHat is the variety?

I think its Salvia greggi. they are white with red flowers

Hot Lips is S. microphylla. I usually wait to prune until winter is over and I start to see new growth, then take it down to just above 3-4 of the bottom new growth.

Okay i wont prune it anymore than i already did then. That a good idea?

I don't know where you live, but the bushy top will help protect the bottom from snow and cold. Waiting helps to see what died from the cold and how far down survived.

San Francisco and i already pruned it so ill wait and see how it survives the winter. If it gets really cold ill cover it at night.

You don't really need to cover a S. microphylla in our winters, but you can if you wish.
