You can plant now, as long as you make sure you keep the trees well watered until the ground freezes. I just had two large balled and burlapped Cornus florida planted a week ago. Check container plants for girdling roots before planting.

I would also mulch the ground around and under it but not touching the trunk. It will help keep the soil warm for longer and help reduce freeze thaw.
