in my very limited experience ... birds attack a few days before a cherry is ripe ... whats that all about..

youre sitting there drooling for the last few days ... and bam ... one day.. the C are all gone ...

Are there any sour cherries that are considered more disease resistant than others? I know Montmorncy and Northstar are pretty popular.

I have 7 or 8 sour cherries and I never spray them and I get lots of good fruit. My problem is that the raccoons climb up and out on the branches and break them.

sour cherry is the one stone fruit here in North Georgia that needs no spray. Birds will be your problem get a dwarf like North Star that is easy to net

Sour cherries are much less finicky then sweet cherries and can be grown much easier. I've seen sweet cherry tree and sour side by side and birds would clean up the sweet cherries but hardly touch the sour ones, depend location and other food sources.

We used to have a large sour cherry tree. Every summer there would be the week of the crow-squirrel wars near the top of the tree. Those were LOUD.

Sun-ripened sour cherry fruit, from the right tree variety, is great for eating fresh and is unsurpassed for making jam.

This was the first year my Montmorency cherry tree produced (it's been in the ground 2 years) and every cherry on the tree was attacked by a pest. They dropped off the tree while they were still green. I would say almost full sized but nowhere close to turning ripe. So the pest pressure in your area will determine if you need to spray or not. No sign of disease on the tree, for what that's worth.

I have a couple dozen Montmorency trees. Never use any pesticide but netting is required to keep the birds from stealing every single cherry (even the unripe ones). For my location Zone 4 central MN they have been very easy to grow. My apple trees require pesticide and fungicide every year.
