Please post a picture of the DR rug. It looks to small for the table. It should be 24" wider all around the table so the chairs stay on it when in use. Maybe that rug could go in the sitting area?? I don't think the futon works ere. Also the 2 chairs are not "cozy". Let's start with the rug

I would sell/move the current furniture. The futon is better suited in a dorm room or game room and parsons chairs will never be "cozy." A coffee bar would only take up a small wall and belongs in the kitchen.

how large of a project is this for you? Have you budgeted for a total overhaul? The furniture you have in the room is the biggest obstacle. Instead of a coffee bar right off the entrance I would leave the coffee bar in the kitchen. But this room in combination with your dining room make for great entertainment spaces . I think a great cart bar would be more suited to the combined spaces. I think you can start with the rug. Based on your photos your dining room rug is way undersized for your dining room table so I would start by moving that rug into this space and making a new dining room rug your first purchase. One that coordinates with the existing rug. Maybe if we get a picture of that rug we can help you pick out a dining room rug that will tie both spaces together. Even though that room is open it has the wall structure to make it possible to paint the room so I would consider painting it a deeper color. The ceiling line might not make it possible but if you could I would Drop a great chandelier in the center and using a round coffee table. I like the idea of four conversation chairs, a bar cart, large dramatic art on the back wall. Floor to ceiling drapes in a silk so there is light reflection. I would go with a monochromatic color scheme that plays off that lovely dining room set but warms it up while still keeping your cool color of the dining set creating more depth to the room. I think Ben Moore Weimareiner paint could accomplish that and Pb makes a duipioni silk drape in a color called Brownstone that is stunning with it. It looks darker in the photo that it is and being silk it has a lot of light reflection and movement. Here are some ideas

I agree with all comments so far: dining rug is way too small, living area needs a real sofa and armchairs, not a futon and slipper chairs.

I would start with art over the (new) sofa and let that inform the color palette.

Go easy on the curlicues. You already have enough with the two tables. You don't need any more on the chairs or pillows.

I would place a sofa on the futon wall with a round coffee table/ottoman and an accent chair in the corner where the floor lamp sits.

Good choice. You'll want to start with the rug. Get some painter's tape and tape out a "rug" that is 36-42" bigger than your table top on all sides. Hopefully, it won't run into the baseboards. That's the size rug you'll want under the table, so take those measurements with you when you shop. Since the dining set has some French flair, shop for classic rugs like orientals. Next item will be a 3-seat sofa. Look for a color that picks up on the major background color of your rug.

Grover showed a nice neutral one that works with your chairs. You could go with a sofa to match the border or the center part.

Ladykate, it's Photoshop, but there is a free app called Gimp that works a lot like Photoshop. Of course, I imagine there's a bit of a learning curve...

BTW, the Oushak I put in your room in the rendering above is a ganga; handknotted wool for around $600 in the 8 x 10. Mainly I wanted to show you how large your rug should be.

groveraxle - I am thinking a rug in the living room area is more important than dining room unless the table can be moved out further from the outer wall? Rug too small for chairs to push back? You need at least 2' better with more for chairs to push back without catching on the edge of the rug.

If she moves the table, Flo, she'll have to move the light. Maybe the dining should just go rugless. Easier to clean up crumbs anyway...unless, of course, one has a dog.

Kate, look at this rendering and then measure to see how large a rug this size would be.

I noticed in a previous thread that you’d like to make the mystery space a library. You could get built in bookshelves on the window wall and add some chairs and/or a sofa comfy enough for reading.

I think you need to first of all consider how much you want to spend and are there any key elements or items that are a must. Also most important what is the look you want to achieve. Think how formal. Think colors. Think what is the purpose of the room and furniture. Shades of grey blue to blue to even turquoise woudl be wonderful. Pick a metal color accent ie gold, silver or bronze (probably not bronze in your case). That couch really was odd - it clearly does not fit the formality of your look. I think giving you ideas is useless if you haven't set up your parameters ie money.
