I have a Royal Raindrops Crabapple and when I scratch the branch surface the wood is light brown and

not green like the other crabs. So I thought it might be dying and went to the local

nursery to inspect the same type of crabs. All of them had dark bark when scratched.

Ninebarks are similar when you scratch the outside. Does the bark darken as

it goes dormant or is this a unique crab?
