I'm having a problem with putting a pretty console in this space and then have the distraction of your dining room ( though that too is pretty) reflecting in the mirror. Would you consider hanging a painting over the mirror? You would still have some of the mirror peaking out.

Just playing around taking that painting you had in your Ideabook to show you how a painting has a more visual impact than a few accessories on the top of the console.

One other thing, you mentioned you were concerned with the height of the console with your 14' ceiling. A painting would fill in that volume and carry the eye up.

In fact , I’ve done it at my house. I decided to keep the wall of mirrors that came with the house and just hang the art like I would on a regular wall.

This question somewhat ties in with the foyer....Is it too soon to choose my dining table centerpiece? Should I wait till I have the foyer completed, then buy a centerpiece?

I’ve had it my mind to buy a pair of back to back Ming horses for the center. Then, for the chairs, I’d rub back the white paint to reveal the black and natural wood underneath and finish with gold highlights. There’s a dark brown glaze on the chairs that isn’t coming through in the photos.

The photo with the ceramic jars is what I originally bought for the table. Should I put them back?

Take back those jars. I'd wait on the centerpiece til the foyer is figured out if your plans are to have the centerpiece be a permanent piece.

My last question of you all is what the area rug should look like in the foyer?

The foyer space is 8’x10. The console is 6’L. The wood floor color is medium walnut. The wall color is light warm-gray tone. The trim is snowball white. The chandelier is gold. The dining rug is a sisal.

Much improved! I like the foyer to introduce you, your style and hint at what's to come in the adjoining rooms. Consider a pair of rugs here and in the dining room that pick up the dining art/chair colors; they don't have to completely match each other. Dining rug only needs to be 36-42" larger than the table all around. Since you can't really center the foyer rug with the doors, and I wouldn't want the new console sitting on it, consider a round rug in the center of the space. Here are a couple (one for winter and one for summer) for the dining room. I think they might work with your cherry chair backs, but maybe not so much with the art. These are IKATs and may not be your style with the ornate furniture. Just looking for color...

Gee. Guess Secluded is going to think about rug. Personally, I think a rug would help give a finished look. Not only rug in front of credenza area but a complimentary runner down hallway. Softens look and reduces noise. Up to you Secluded.

The only way I see a rug looking good in this very not symmetrical space is if you do a custom cut and bound such as Stark with a border that mimics the shape of the room and covers a good deal of it!

I know the sisal in the dining room is fairly new but down the road I'd love to see something with a bit more pizzazze replace it. The sisal is just too uninspiring in this room compared to what else you got going on.

your foyer has an art deco vibe to me. how about an art deco statue? And maybe a plant in the floor. Or maybe a grand floral arrangement in the center of the table instead.

Tedbixby, I'm so excited to see you responded to this string. Yippee! I agree about the sisal. In fact, I have been looking at rugs that have muted color tones of warm whites and distressed.

Remember my "Tray Dilemma"? I'll take a picture of the new tray i purchased. It's unlike any tray I've seen. The burl wood is beautiful, heavy and the quality of the design appears to be by hand. Long ago you suggested a tray of fine quality along with other points of design and I found it...I hope it's up to your liking. I like to make you happy! I painted a tray per your suggestion which I like bc it's fun looking, but the burl tray is to beautiful to not to have on the ottoman. Picture coming soon.

Tedbixby, here’s the tray. I centered it on the ottoman for a style shoot for you, but really we keep it nearer the corner for our convenience. I perfer when it off center.

Flo, for now I’m keeping the sisal in the dining room, but at some point in time I’ll buy. I saw a tone on tone silk that had variants of warm white tones. It was stunning, glossy and pricey, so I’m looking for an adaptation of appearance at a lesser price.

Dear Lynartist, Since you posted the animal prints (rugs), may I ask you if an animal print throw blanket would look lovely folded over the sofa (or, swivels) in the LA?

A little background....Two months ago I posted a “ottoman tray Dilemma” and several people got off topic to let me know my LA needs texture. Someone suggested a leopard print throw blanket. Another, fur. Another, teal cashmere. What do you think, do I need texture? You know my style personality so well, I just had to ask you please!

Since August, my partner and I have been dealing with 3 out of 4 ill parents. One of them passed last week and today was the service. One of the many reasons I haven't been around much on Houzz. Sorry to be such a debbie downer but all of you are like family to me so wanted to share.

Secluded- if you are happy with your LR don't beat yourself up trying to please everyone. You know what you like and what you don't so if you are happy with everything then let it be rather then 2nd guessing yourself which seems that those posting did.

Oh wow Tedbixby that’s very sad, draining and time consuming. We’re at the age where we have very old parents who need our sharp hearing and nimble minds to repeat everything correctly that the doctors say to our parents. Stay sharp during the day then treat yourself to a little toddy, no, b.i.g. toddy in the evening and be joyful you and your partner are young.
You’re not alone, we are like family. Pray that the Lord will orchestrate every move and word you and your partner have for each other, your folks, drs, and nurses. Let your character shine through bc you are so wonderfully made by your mom and dad. They are for sure proud of you!

Hi, Secluded. Bringing in a bit more color and pattern into the foyer might give richness and sumptuousness and be the thing which “completes” the rooms. Keeping it a smaller size could help with cost of a very expensive Tibetan - or you might angle it so it would not need to line up with any other dimensions , Ie. doorways or hall.
This might work with your beautiful things and allow you to keep the calm gold of the room size woven sisal in the dining room . So pretty, complimentary and just might add that last little touch of warmth and pizazz. Sending the sizes in case you like it - you could tape out a size to try on the foyer floor.

I think your LA is certainly not lacking in texture or color/ pattern Secluded. It may not be evident from an overall photo but there is so much texture in the beautiful fabrics here as well as the nubby texture of the rug. The smooth texture of the leather ottoman, the lovely wood tray. Even the art! There is nothing boring here. I liked the idea of the animal print in the foyer if you did a custom rug. It suits the vibe of that space. A bit exotic and sexy. I don’t think you need it in a throw.

Nothing wrong with your sisal rug that a beautiful jacquard or tapestry border can’t fix! Shop some specialty rug shops or design centers for upscale trim! These can be sewn on.

You have such an elegant home! Love the art in the dining room and the coral backed chairs. Stunning. For the foyer, I think I would repeat the sisal that is in the dining room. It wears well for a high traffic area and won’t fight the lovely touches in the joining room. It will also add some warmth and texture. I would go large. Maybe 6x9? Or a bit wider? I think I would like to see the front feet of your table on the rug.
