Avocado tree & extreme heat

Hi,

i planted an avocado tree in January. Then an intense July heat wave killed the top of an otherwise thriving tree. The nursery recommended I cut the dead parts of the tree which I did. I cut the main trunk down to where the leaves were still growing. Pic attached. Is this fine or will it grow funky as the main trunk is now missing. Thanks in advance. - George

Try the avocado forum here and mulch around the base of the tree to help keep roots cool

Can you take close up pictures of the graft line? I think you lost the fruiting part of the tree, the rootstock has survived. If you did lose the desired cultivar, you will have to graft that rootstock again.

Young avo trees are very subject to burning. Shadecloth is a must during heatwaves. Look carefully as to where the graft line is on the trunk. If the live growth is coming from below that line...throw that tree away.

Thanks for the feedback. Here’s a closeup pic. The tree grew to about 3.5 feet and lush, but once the heatwave hit, most of the main trunk was burnt. Thanks in advance.
