I adored mini chicklets when I was a child, but that was a long time ago. :)

When I'm trying to find something that I can't find in a store, the first place I go is Amazon.com. Between what they stock, and all the independent vendors who sell through them, you can get just about anything. Including mini-chicklets. I don't know if they taste the same as in the past, or if the colors have changed, but there are choices out there, and they should work fine for your purposes.

Alternatives would include cutting them out of fondant or fruit leather or colored liquorice. You can make a rope of fondant the way you might from polymer clay, kind of squish it to get the pillowy shape, then just slice off bits.

Chicklets is easier. If you haven't tried a Mexican market yet, and have one near you, they might be more likely to have them. Otherwise, go online. I am sure she doesn't give a hoot about who made the candy, it's the look....and those mini bits of candy coated gum are all over the internet!!

Given Sherry's post, I looked around a bit. It does seem that the Tiny Chciklets envelopes are off the market, but since Kimberley is after the gum, not the packaging, Amazon has a one pound bag for $5.99 from a different maker. It seems that a lot of the chicklets wannabes are packaged for vending machines. My guess is that a lot of that is for people who have old time penny machines that they want to fill. You used to get a (child's) handful of minis for a penny...

ETA: Candy Warehouse has a listing for the Dubble Bubble version, which comes in a jar. They say they're minis but I do wish they'd show a size reference.

jojo, I agree, the multi-colored candy coated sunflower seeds to make perfect lights, and I've also used the large "pearls" found in the cake decorating department, they come in many colors, the ones I found at the local Joann Fabrics were by Wilton.

And, as plllog mentioned, they can just be piped with a decorating tip and piping bag, although it's tedious to change tips for each color.

Thank you all for your help. The sunflower seeds and nerds both are good choices. I even saw tic tacs at the candy counter today that might work. On these websites with the chiclets, what I am finding is the chiclets are not the same size as before.

That's what I thought about them not being the same size. Some of the reviews on Amazon were addressing that issue.

If you have an old time hardware or variety store in town, you might check there. We have Harrison Brother's and Lewter's in Huntsville, Al and U G White Mercantile in Athens, AL. They carry various types of old time toys and candy. That way you could look at the size of the replacement copies. I love the candied sunflower seeds.
