a timely thread went "poof"

All my many notifications regarding a sensitive, but timely, topic disappeared today.
That thread is also gone, along with hundreds of posts, decrying the ban on a valued member.
In those posts are a number of suggestions for ways to make moderating more consistent and fair.
Those posts are no longer visible, but I do hope management is reviewing, and listening. And thinking about the many solid comments no longer visible.
Moderating is never easy, but is more difficult with capricious utilization of unclear standards
This post will likely go "poof" as well.
I really love this board, but I think I will take a break. All of us have lives beyond the board, and this is breaking my heart. I have many other things to do, and places to go.

I guess I've been out of touch, but does this mean that Sophie was banned? She's a bit salty, but she always gives solid advice. I hope I am interpreting this incorrectly!

I have to say, I'm not optimistic. There have been previous discussions about improving moderation policies and systems, and providing better interface with the community, but nothing has changed. I think this will be more of the same.

Sophie is gone, not returning. Can be found on Facebook, Aunt Sophies Corner, apparently you must be ask / be granted access. The reasons for departure certainly set off much debate; she made a final choice to not return. And yes, she is missed as is her invaluable, sound, albeit very direct advice : ) 'Nuff said. As grandma said. Be careful what you wish for, you may get ti.

Yeah, this forum has gone pretty dead, what with all the departures, voluntary and involuntary. But HT continues on its not so merry way, so I guess that's all that matters.

Interesting that the thread in question is back, so presumably it wasn't pulled by Houzz but flagged by a poster. And therin lies the problem with the whole system. Someone doesn't like something and they can disrupt a conversation, temporarily or permanently, simply by flagging it. Much better for the moderators to leave the post in place until it can be removed. If course, that would involve having a real moderation team instead of relying on participants to do the culling.

The other dozen or so earlier threads on the subject seem to have gone permanently absent. It's a bit unclear, but the issue seems to have been flagging comments rather than making them. Go figure.
