Ugly kitchen color

My new kitchen is a hideous shade of yellow (apologize - the lighting is not good at this time of day). I attached pictures of the new paint color in the living room as the two rooms open to one another and a new paint color will have to mesh. I intensely dislike the blonde oak cabinets, but unfortunately budget does not allow for their replacement. I primarily need ideas as to how to freshen this room up and color scheme/paint color! :)

Please excuse the clutter and the blue tablecloth - I was desperate to save my cherry wood table from my neighbor's twin 3 years olds this morning during an impromptu visit.

Replace the hardware, replace the light over the sink. Add a few large scale decorative items on top of the cabinets. I have found that a soft sage green looks good w/ these cabinets

Since its all so open concept, can you continue the paint color from the loving room into the kitchen? It's difficult to tell if it would go with your cabinets. Agree with above - replace hardware and fixture over sinks.

Hmm...Hadn't thought of continuing the paint color into the kitchen...wouldn't that be awfully dark?

    How about teal?

Wow! I LOVE the teal idea!

As much as I would LOVE to do something fun and colorful, I need to stay more neutral - my husband is getting transferred to D.C. for two years sometime around November, so we will have to rent the house out. At the end of that two year period, we are going to decide if we are going to move back or stay, in which case we may end up having to sell.....this is one of those areas that deals in neutrals only. In fact, I've been scolded by my realtor friend for the living room color, even that is considered too dark to be a good neutral in this housing market.

You have good light in the kitchen. The LR color should be okay. Paint a patch next to one of the cabinets to see if it clashes, but it looks, frankly, similar to what you're already got! Computer photos are disceiving when it comes to color. Nothing translates true.

Can you do a closeup of the backsplash? It looks like white subway tile.

If you're dedicated enough (and energetic enough!), you could strip the cabinets and paint. Or restain. There are companies that makecabinet doors replacements. Definitely new hardware (now, THAT can add up!). It's not difficult for a carpenter to remove the middle of a couple of cabinet doors to replace with glass. That would open up the kitchen atmosphere. The doors over the microwave could be removed for cookbook storage or mixing bowls. That space is usually wasted. I recommend considering painting the inside of the cabinets a complimentary tone to the walls.

Recommend painting your AC vents same color as walls.

I may need to take better pics tomorrow - the kitchen is a marigold yellow. :( The living room used to be the same color, until I repainted it to Behr's Peanut Butter. Below is a better pic that shows the difference. The backsplash IS white subway tile - it's not pretty, but it isn't hideous either. What color would you recommend painting the cabinets? White? Unfortunately space/cupboard design is a huge issue in this kitchen, I had to get rid of a lot of my kitchenwares just to fit everything when we moved in, so opening up that cupboard would be problematic as I store my crockpot and sauce pot up there. I love the idea of glass cabinets, but probably out of budget, too. (I have to paint the entire house, reseed and landscape a yard, and remodel the master closet before we transfer in order have a hope of breaking even when we go to rent/sell). Didn't even think about the vents - thanks for the tip!
