What about putting a brown stain over the gold to soften it?

I think there is to much symmetry. Try not having each side match the other so much. I also don't quite understand the purpose of the three tiny round plates (?) at the top. Those draw my eyes upward when I think the focus should be brought down.

Actually now that I looked at it again, I think that while I understand what you working on doing, the mirror is too small for the fireplace. Try a larger mirror and perhaps one without a gold frame. You might even try an oval one, too. Then mix up the symmetry, etc. as I said above. Good luck...I think you're on to something.

I love the brown painted wall as a backdrop for the fireplace! I would remove the plates from the top and keep that area empty...,
