A carpenter to remove the rounded part that extends out from the wall, and drywall to fill in the rest. It shouldn't be terribly expensive and you can then do whatever you want with the wall—art, furniture, etc.

How many Design Dilemmas are about niches.....lots.

You will save money not buying any sculptures but instead just call the drywall guy. They are not features that you need to worry about or keep.

Here's a better pic of one of the niches. I hate to fill them in. Seems like almost all of the new builds we looked at had a couple of these....I actually think they look nice, but the bottom ledge is not really deep enough that I'd be comfortable putting a sculpture or anything on it.

They are a "design features" that a builder installed. He thought they made the house look expensive! They cause dilemmas and serve no useful purpose.

If you had built your home to your specifications and there was a painting you owned that you wanted to showcase then that would be different. Don't let the builders bad idea push you into buying something that probably wont' fit or look good.

I agree to drywall them and then choose art to hang on the space.

We are building a new house and honestly, I would not have thought to put a niche in as i find them rather old fashioned. But that is a personal style preference.

I would elect to fill them in but if you would rather keep them for resale or something, then maybe just stick a tall vase of flowers there. Or an appropriately sized painting (although if there is a painting, I would probably prefer to install a niche pot light too, which is yet another expense).

I'm with you Pamela, I think they look nice too. Whatever you put in them probably won't be curved. Where are they exactly in your home? The foyer?

There's one in the foyer right next to the dining room, and one at the end of the hallway by the entrance to the living room. I found a couple of sculptures and vases that might sit on the ledge, but I'm afraid if they're not super tall it's going to look weird....

Bring your little curio cabinet and put it there. Worth a try.
