We got major deals on a headboard and night stand at a freight company that sells damaged furniture. The cabinet at the end of the bed is actually an entertainment console from Costco. I'm using a small dresser for a night table on my side that I will replace whenever I find the right piece. I have never bought an actual "set" of any furniture. The trick is getting close to the same finish and style. Painted furniture works as long as you also have the color in other parts of the room. It doesn't have to be another furniture piece could be in bedding or art.

My advice is to not have two stained pieces of furniture together that are different colors. As a woodworker, I've learned over the years that natural (unstained) woods of two different colors can sit beside each other, but stained ones cannot.

When the eye sees natural wood, it picks up on all the variations of color. Because of the variety of colors, the eye is forgiving with having two different prices next to each other. With stained furniture, it's one colour providing a consistent tone and the eye sees one color. When you have two stained pieces next to each other, it is very obvious that they don't belong together and can look like leftover furniture put into a room.

I suggest looking for painted nightstands. I hope that helps.

I think it might be best to go with something painted or different for nightstand then. I get what you're saying. Even if it works to an extent it really does look off perhaps. At least not it's best.
