I ate a Melogold from the store last month and it was surprisingly good! I was expecting it to have no flavor like the green cocktail grapefruits I tried last year but you’re right about that grapefruit/limey taste. I didn’t notice bitterness in my market Melogold though. Yours sounds on par with how ripe they pick it for commercial sale. I bet the next fruit will start tasting much better!

Thanks guys! Amy, the tree is 4 years old, a "true dwarf", lower branches spreading, and around 3 1/2 feet tall? I am guessing a close proximity. I will see if I can find a picture of the tree.

Kvetch, Fruity, I am already looking forward to next year. Lol. Kvetch, I have at least five fruit on my Cocktail Grapefruit, varying sizes. They are still green and I hope they fully ripen and sweeten up more than the Melogold.

Laura, did you pick and sample your Cocktail Grapefruit yet?

Jinny, I have had two. I’m not super impressed by either, but one had problems and was partly rotten. The other just fell off like yours. I tried it and it was better. There are two more on the tree starting to turn yellow. I guess I’m just not a fan of grapefruit lol. The one I like the best is the ruby ray. The oroblanco I did not care for much either. I’m guvjng them another try this year to really be sure and then maybe give them to someone - like my farmer friend. It’s a bummer bc the flowers smell so good! If I have pick, I prefer the mandarins. I’ll take a pic of the cocktail fruit when I harvest the next one.

Thanks, Jenny! :) Laura, thanks for the feedback, hopefully the tree and fruit will improve with age. I know that growing conditions affect the flavor and fruit quality of grapefruit so we shall see how the fruit do over the next few years. I love grapefruit /pummelo and the tree and flowers are a lovely bonus. How is the Tahitian Pummelo doing?

Hi Jinny! That little tree is holding steady but did not grow much this summer. It’s still a twig. We shall see how it does this winter indoors. I’ll let you know about the cocktail and oroblanco. I’m holding off to hopefully let them ripen more.

Thanks everyone! :) Laura, I have a few fruit each on my Tahitian Pummelo trees. They are near baseball size, green and just starting to turn soft. I am really looking forward to trying this variety and the Cocktail Grapefruit. I hope they don't fall off in my hand if I go to squeeze them unless they are ripe. Lol

Bob, sorry! I shared the first fruits with my hubby and grandson. They claimed first dibs. Lol. Maybe another time? :)

Story of my life, i guess i have to grow stuff myself and invite you! You are just like Laura, she keeps baking these delicious things and they are gone just like that. Was going to pick-up Steve and drive to the EastCoast and claim something good.
