Need help with my Apache blackberry

Is it too early for this to have died back? It was still in its pot, and I was planning on planting it out in December, but it started dying back badly, so I figured I'd better get it into the ground. The roots looked pretty healthy. It still has one tiny spindly cane that is about 8 inches long, which had leaves day before yesterday, but they died overnight, even though the stem is still green. I planted it on the hill, so it would get good drainage. Removed most of the original soil and planted it at the same depth as it was potted. Didn't amend the soil.
