Wow! What a bargain and fun project. I love the little ladder. :)

Thank you, ladder was easier to make than I thought. Once I built the ladder, I used coat hooks (upside down of course) to hang the ladder on the copper railing. I had seen rolling library ladder kits but they were way too expensive. So, I used 3/4" copper tubing that plumbers use. I always like using industrial items for things other than their intended use.

Tell us how you set about building this. It looks better than most professional closets I have seen!

The key is planning. I probably spent as much time planning it out as I did building it. I used a graphic design program to layout the designs seen below. I also used the same program to layout the cuts on the sheets of plywood in order to get the most out of each sheet. After that it really is easier than it looks.

Essentially you are building a series of boxes that you then attached together. I've attached photo of the project in progress which shows the "boxes" a little better. I built a platform for the units to sit on (as seen in the "in progress" image below) to give the look of a cabinet toe-kick. Once the units were in I then installed a face-frame made from 1x4 boards. This gives the unit a more substantial look and hides the edges of the plywood.

The had the two dressers already. I cut off the legs, painted them and installed new hardware. Allowing the dressers to stick out slightly further than the closet units added some depth and gave a real nice built in look.

It took awhile to sand and paint all the wood. It took something like 3 gallons of paint and was the most time consuming part of the project.

I'm curious how many hours of time yOu invested including designing, travel time to the lumber and paint store? And how much is your time worth hourly, then you will have the true cost of your master closet. Nice job by the way!!!

I don't think you can put a true number/price on a labour of love! Good for you to be able to see this project thru.

@Capitol Closet Design - It took me 4-5 weekends. It's not a project for everyone, that's why companies like yours exist. But, no matter the amount of time I have involved in the project, I wouldn't have paid someone to do. My DIY skills are born out of the fact that I'm cheap. But you ask how much is my time worth, I had this job quoted out by three different closet companies and the cheapest quote was $12,000. My cost was $2,000 so my time was worth $10,000.

@ newmanboy32, the dimensions in the fist image were around 7' wide and 10' tall and 14" deep

@ Lynda Meyers, everything was custom made, including the shelving. The shelves and frame were constructed using 3/4" cabinet grade plywood then faced with various widths of 1 by popular.

Hi I love this walk in closet, I am in the same delima, all quotes are from £11,000 to cheapest £6000, I can't afford that, any suggestions?

There are several kits available that hang from a rail that are easy to install and will come in under the quoted prices. Places like IKEA have tons of options when it comes to closet systems and they look nice. They don't have the same built in feel but look better than just a bunch of shelves and rods.
