Curtains definitely, some nice white linen curtains all the way to the floor, and pops of colour of pistachio and turqoise with the throw pillows. I'd keep the area rugs nice and bright. Use a faux fur throw blanket for extra coziness. :)

For area rugs and in a room of this size and with the current layout, you want the front of the legs for the sofa and chairs to be on the rug. Most mistakes that homeowners make is putting in area rugs that are too small. A larger rug helps to make the space look more cohesive and well put together. See below for an example in a clients living room we designed.

I'm not sure why you can't have bright colours with toddlers. I imagine you won't want to invest a lot in a rug if there are little ones around anyway, so that is where I would have fun and be bold to pull a colour scheme together. Colour match your furniture fabric with paint chips and then keep them in your purse, then when you go shopping, you'll have them handy to pull out and compare to pillows, throws and area rugs to ensure they work with your current furniture. When budget allows, definitely invest in draperies to soften the space and give you some privacy.

You always want your furniture front legs on the rug as a minimum.

Put blue painters tape on your floor approximately 8" outside the edge of your sofa for the length of a rug and then measure out to other furniture legs and tape spots then measure to get approx. rug sizing.

Straw like rugs do not seem to go well with this setup. But you can also consider layering one rug over the other, with the one on the top being an easy to clean type of rug. you can get inspo from houzz very easily. There are rugs, you can throw into the washing machine every now and then.

A patterned rug will not show spots as easily...great for kids. A rug which can be spot-cleaned with a sponge is also good with kids. Choose a rug with a flat, low pile rather than anything with a longer or shag pile: much easier to vacuum, to clean, and to keep looking neat.

IMO I think it’s a bit too much for this room. Is your wall a light pink? Are you planning on changing the lighting? Your home has a bit of a Industrial look to it.

This rug and lighting will compliment your space a lot more with a touch of industrial and minimal look yet look subtle.

I would choose a more muted color rug so it doesn't totally dominate your space. Also, size it properly. Measure from under the front legs of your sofa about 12" to the other side of the room so furniture is sitting on the rug, then from the windows leave about 12" from the windows to where the "walkway" is on the other side. That will "bound" the space and then we can size rug from there. Size of rug is critical to this space. It will "ground" your space and be very important.
