Oh thank you all! I posted thinking I would get told off for butchering my trees! Good to know my housekeeping instincts didn't lead me astray! I'll do the same to the front yard trees after frost season, then!

I thought that clearing out the center was bad as it allowed the trunk to get sunburned. I have some Owari trees that are so slow in growing that their trunks do look like they are burnt. There is very little foliage to protect the trunk. I have read that painting the trunks white will protect them.

Just want to point out that a dense canopy can help protect the tree in stressful conditions (blazing hot sun, dry wind, cold).

I give up.
