They pruned the roots? Pruning roots is very stressful. I wouldn't think they'd do that before shipping. I've seen sellers prune branches sometimes. Do you have a pic of the roots so we can better understand?

Yes, davhines. A photo as Candice mentions would better show and assist someone making comment, if it is possible.

Generally defoliating is all one would expect if being shipped a long distance. Occasionally if a plant is coming in post within a day or so, they may be shipped w a few leaves intact.

If it where root pruned excessively, it would be important to make sure cut ends of large roots had callused before planting.

Much will depend on your Geographical location or conditions being applied during the winter as to whether you can expect any root development of any kind.
